Practice Exercise – Linear Equations in Two Variables (Class X)
1. Form the pair of linear equations for the following and solve graphically:
(1) The sum of the ages of a father and his son is 60 years. Five years ago, the father's age
was four times his son's age. Find their present ages.
(2) A two-digit number is such that the digit in the tens place is twice the digit in the units
place. If the digits are reversed, the new number is 36 more than the original number. Find
the number.
(3) A train covers a certain distance in 2 hours. If it had run 10 km/h faster, it would have
taken 12 minutes less. Find the distance and speed of the train.
(4) There are 40 animals in a farm consisting of cows and hens. The total number of legs is
100. Find the number of cows and hens.
(5) The sum of the present ages of a mother and her daughter is 50 years. Five years ago,
the mother was four times as old as her daughter. Find their present ages.
(6) The sum of two numbers is 25. If 3 is subtracted from one number and 1 is added to the
other, the resulting numbers are in the ratio 2:3. Find the numbers.
2. On comparing the ratios a₁/a₂, b₁/b₂ and c₁/c₂, determine the nature of the
lines:
(1) 2x + 3y = 5 ; 4x + 6y = 10
(2) 5x - y = 3 ; 15x - 3y = 8
(3) 3x + 4y - 7 = 0 ; 6x + 8y - 14 = 0
(4) x - y = 3 ; 2x - 2y = 6
(5) 7x + 5y = 10 ; 14x + 10y = 25
3. Check whether the following pairs of equations are consistent or
inconsistent:
(1) 4x + 5y = 20 ; 8x + 10y = 40
(2) x - 2y = 6 ; 2x - 4y = 10
(3) 6x - 3y = 9 ; 2x - y = 3
(4) 7x - y = 14 ; -14x + 2y = -28
(5) 3x + 2y = 10 ; 4x - y = 5
(6) 5x - 3y = 2 ; 10x - 6y = 5
4. Identify and solve graphically the consistent/inconsistent pairs of equations:
(1) x + y = 7 ; 3x - y = 5
(2) 2x + 5y = 20 ; 4x + 10y = 40
(3) x - y = 4 ; 2x - 2y = 8
(4) x + 2y = 6 ; 2x + 4y = 12
(5) 3x + 4y = 12 ; 6x + 8y = 24
5. Solve the following word problems:
(1) The perimeter of a rectangle is 60 m. If the length is twice the breadth, find the
dimensions using linear equations.
(2) A park has a rectangular boundary. Its length is 10 m more than its breadth and the
perimeter is 180 m. Find the dimensions of the park.
6. Given the linear equation 3x - y + 5 = 0, write another linear equation such
that the pair represents:
(1) intersecting lines
(2) parallel lines
(3) coincident lines
7. Draw the graphs of the equations and find the triangle area:
Draw the graphs of 2x + y = 6 and x - y = 2. Find the coordinates of the triangle formed by
these lines and the y-axis. Shade the triangular region.
