2022 Trees Homework

Trees are for birds.

Trees are for children.
Trees are to make tree houses in.
Trees are to swing swings on.
Trees are for the wind to blow through.
Trees are to hide behind in ‘Hide and Seek.’
Trees are to have tea parties under.
Trees are for kites to get caught in.
Trees are to make cool shade in summer.
Trees are to make no shade in winter.

Trees are for apples to grow on, and pears;

Trees are to chop down and call, “TIMBER-R-R!”
Trees make mothers say,
“What a lovely picture to paint!”
Trees make fathers say,
“What a lot of leaves to rake this fall !”

Summary of the poem

The poet lists down the various activities done on trees. Birds live in the trees; children
climb trees and play. They make tree houses, swing swings on trees. The wind also
blows through the trees. The children hide behind trees when they play hide and seek.
People sit under the shade of the tree and enjoy tea parties. The kites flying in the sky
get caught in the trees, The cool shade of the tree is enjoyed by people during the hot
summer months. In the winter months they do not give shade because they have shed
all the leaves. Trees bear many fruits like apples and pears; they are cut, and the wood
is used as timber. The mothers see the beautiful trees and say that the scene is good to
paint a picture. The fathers see the trees and say that the trees are full of leaves, and
they will have to collect a lot of leaves when they fall off the trees, during the fall
season.
Question and answers

Q1. What are the games or human activities which use trees, or in which trees also
‘participate’?
Ans. Trees are used for climbing. Swings are tied to trees. Children hide behind trees while
playing hide and seek. Tree houses are also made using trees. We can enjoy picnics in the
shade of trees.

Q2.
(i) “Trees are to make no shade in winter.” What does this mean? (Contrast this line
with the line immediately before it.)
Ans. In summers the trees provide shade while in winters they do not. This is so because
they shed the leaves during fall months. As they do not have any leaves, thus the shade is
not there.
(ii) “Trees are for apples to grow on, or pears.” Do you agree that one purpose of a
tree is to have fruit on it? Or do you think this line is humorous?
Ans. Yes, this is a purpose of having trees. Trees bear fruits and they are grown for this
purpose.
