Latitude and Longitude
Latitude and longitude are the two coordinate systems used to determine the precise
location of any place on Earth. They are measured in degrees (°) and help in navigation,
mapping, and global positioning.
Latitude
Latitude lines, also known as parallels, are imaginary lines that run horizontally around the
Earth. They measure the distance north or south of the Equator, ranging from 0° at the
Equator to 90° at the poles. Important lines of latitude include the Equator, Tropic of
Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, Arctic Circle, and Antarctic Circle.
Longitude
Longitude lines, also called meridians, are imaginary lines that run vertically from the North
Pole to the South Pole. They measure the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian, which
is set at 0° longitude and passes through Greenwich, England. Longitude ranges from 0° to
180° east and west.
Features of Latitude and Longitude
1. Both are measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds.
2. Latitude lines are parallel to each other, whereas longitude lines converge at the poles.
3. The intersection of latitude and longitude determines an exact location.
4. Latitudes influence climate zones, while longitudes are important for time zones.
5. Both are part of the geographic coordinate system.
Importance
Latitude and longitude are crucial for navigation, mapping, and geographic studies. They are
used in GPS technology, determining time zones, locating places for travel, shipping, and
aviation, and in various scientific research related to Earth's geography and environment.
Uses
1. Navigation for ships, aircraft, and vehicles.
2. Mapping and chart-making.
3. Determining time zones.
4. Weather forecasting and climate research.
5. Search and rescue operations.
6. Military and defense applications.
Parallels and Meridians
Parallels refer to the horizontal lines of latitude that circle the Earth parallel to the Equator.
Meridians refer to the vertical lines of longitude that connect the North Pole to the South
Pole. Together, they form a grid system that helps in pinpointing any location on Earth.
