Name: ___________________________ Date: ___________________________

1. What is Descriptive Writing?

Descriptive writing helps the reader see, hear, smell, taste, and feel what you are describing. We
use sensory details and vivid words to paint pictures with our writing.

2. Sensory Words Chart

As you observe your object or picture, write down details for each sense:
Sense What do you notice? (Adjectives, details, sounds, smells, etc.)
Sight
Sound
Smell
Taste
Touch

3. Example
Object: An Orange
- Sight: bright orange, round, bumpy skin
- Sound: peel crackling, squish when pressed
- Smell: sweet, citrusy, fresh
- Taste: juicy, tangy, refreshing
- Touch: rough, dimpled, cool

Sample sentence:
The bright orange fruit sat in my palm, its bumpy skin cool to the touch and its sweet, citrusy smell
filling the air.

4. Your Turn!
Look closely at your object or picture. Fill in your chart, then use your ideas to write a descriptive
paragraph (5–6 sentences) below. Use at least 3 different senses.
