OBJECTIVE:
a. To make a start/stop (D-O-L start) circuit to control the operation of a motor
using PLC.
b. To make a start/stop/jog circuit to control the operation of a motor using PLC.
c. To control the direction of an AC motor using PLC.

EQUIPMENTREQUIRED:
 Computer
 PLC trainer with I/O modules
 Control relays and magnetic contactors
 Control wire and tool box

1. Theory
1.1 Start/Stop control (Direct-on-line start)
The simplest form of motor starter for the induction motor is the Direct On Line starter.
The Direct On Line Motor Starter (DOL) consists of an MCCB or circuit breaker, contactor
and an overload relay for protection. Electromagnetic contactor which can be opened by the
thermal overload relay under fault conditions.
Typically, the contactor is controlled by separate start and stop buttons through wired
loop logic (WLC) or through Programming Logic Controller (PLC).

1.2 Start/Stop/Jog control

Another control circuit which not only used to start or stop the motor but it also
provides the Jog operation. Jogging refers to move the motor in small increments such as
moving a crane to a particular location. The jog push button when pushed will break the
sealing contact, and then make a bypass of the start pushbutton. This will keep the coil on as
long as the jog button is pressed. Letting go of the jog will stop the bypass of the start
pushbutton which will de- energize the coil. When the jog returns to the original state, input
will already be off so it will not keep coil on.

1.3 Reverse/Forward control

There are many applications which require motors to run in both directions such as
movements of crane, lift, conveyors etc. This circuit can also be implemented through both
WLC and PLC ladder logic. The circuit requires two NO push buttons for reverse and forward
operation and one NC push button to stop the rotation of motor. The logic must have
interlocking contacts to avoid short circuit when the motor is running in one direction and the
operator tries to operate in the other direction without stopping the motor.

IV. Open-Ended Task

Design a WLC and a Ladder Logic that could give a complete control mechanism
for the automatic overhead water filling system at home. The system must check if the
upper tank is empty, if water lies in the lower tank it would turn on the motor for the
duration till either the upper tank is filled or the lower tank gets empty. The tanks status
and motor status must be represented by LEDs. Hint: Use toggle switch rather than push
buttons.
