TUTORIAL – 3

RESERVOIR AND GRAVITY DAM

100 Marks

1. Monthly inflows at a proposed reservoir site for drought period of 15 months are given
along with the target demands in Table – 1. Compute the minimum storage of the reservoir
that is required to meet the target demand by using sequent peak algorithm method. Plots
the graph that is necessary.

2. The streamflow data observed in a river during a lean year is given in table – 2. Determine
the following:

a) What is the maximum uniform demand that can be met?

b) What is the minimum storage capacity of the reservoir required to meet this demand?

c) When does the reservoir become empty?

3. Table – 3 gives mean monthly flows in a river during the year 1981. Calculate the minimum
storage required to maintain a uniform demand rate of 60 m3/s, using the Mass Curve
method.

4. The bottom width of a masonry dam is 8.25m and the top width is 1.0m. The height of the
masonry dam is 10.0m and the face exposed to the side of the water has a slope of 1:10.
Calculate the following:

a factor of safety against overturning

b factor of safety against sliding

c shear friction factor

Assume unit weight of masonry as 2240kg/m3 and water as 1000 kg/m3. Assume
permissible shear stress of joint as 14kg/cm2.

Consider the coefficient of friction as 0.5 and 0.75 and provide the remarks.

5. You are an Engineer assigned with the responsibility of checking the cross-section of a
masonry dam for stability designed by a consultant. The height of the dam has been
designed as 9.0m. The top width of the dam is 1.0m and the bottom width of the dam is
4.0m. Check the stability of the cross-section of the masonry dam for stability and if it is
not stable kindly compute the optimized cross-section satisfying the stability conditions.
Assume unit weight of masonry as 2240kg/m3 and water as 1000 kg/m3. (Hint: height of
the dam)
