Goal: When an item of interest is within sight, the student will initiate a comment such as, “Look it’s a
__”

Instructional Procedure: Set up opportunities to use specific phrases. For example, to teach “I have”,
place objects into a bag and have the student pull one out and say, “I have __”. To teach “I see”, have
the student label items in books. Take turns in order to model appropriate verbal responses. Also,
use incidental teaching to promote naturalistic opportunities. If the student states the phrase
correctly within 3 seconds, provide behavior specific praise and reinforcement. If the student errors,
prompt using a verbal model and/or a visual cue and repeat the trial until the student is able to
respond to the SD independently. Fade prompts over subsequent teaching opportunities.
Differentially reinforce responses demonstrated with the lowest level of prompting.

Teaching Steps:
1. I see (items in a book, flash cards on table)
a. With text cue + point to text cue + verbal model
b. With text cue + point to text cue (no more verbal model)
c. Text cue only
d. No text cue
2. I have (pulls items out of a bag, holds an item, etc.) – Steps a-d
3. Randomly rotate (RR) mastered targets
4. I hear (hears a sound on the ipad) – Steps a-d
5. Randomly rotate (RR) mastered targets
6. Look … (items in environment, flash cards, books, etc.) – Steps a-d
7. Randomly rotate (RR) mastered targets
8. It’s a … (items in environment, flash cards, books, etc.) – Steps a-d
9. Randomly rotate (RR) mastered targets
10. I’m wearing (clothing items on himself) – Steps a-d
11. Randomly rotate (RR) mastered targets
12. Reciprocal conversation / Comment-Comment

Suggested Teaching Strategies:

● Make the activity fun: Pull objects out of a bag, take turns, hide the object and the student has to
find the object first, etc.
● Use multiple exemplars and switch items regularly

Mastery Criteria: 80% for two consecutive sessions
