Lab guide - Density

Objectives:

- Understand the concept of density.

- Learn how to measure mass and volume of liquids and solids.
- Learn how to calculate density of liquids and solids.

Materials:

- Four different small solids (2 regular, - Balance scale

2 irregular) - Ruler
- Water - Graduated cylinder
- Oil (any type) - Dropper/pipettes
- Rubbing alcohol - Beakers
- Fruit juice - Calculator

Note: choose solids made of different materials, and that are small enough to fit in a graduated
cylinder. You can bring more than four objects and other types of liquids.

Procedure:

Part I. Determining the density of regular-shaped solids.

1. Use a balance scale to measure the mass of the solid object.

2. Record the mass in grams.
3. Measure the dimensions (length, width, and height) of the object using a ruler.
4. Calculate the volume using the formula v = l x h x w.
5. Record the volume in cubic centimeters.
6. Calculate the density using the formula d = m/v.
7. Record the density in g/cm3.
8. Repeat the process with the other regular object.

Part II. Determining the density of irregular-shaped solids.

1. Measure the mass of the irregular-shaped object using a balance scale.

2. Record the mass in grams.
3. Fill a graduated cylinder with a known volume of water.
4. Submerge the irregular object in the water and measure the new water level.
5. Calculate the volume of the object in the water and measure the new water level.
6. Record the volume in cubic centimeters.
7. Calculate the density using the formula d = m/v
8. Record the density in g/cm3.
9. Repeat the process with the other irregular object.

Part III. Determining the density of liquids

1. Measure the mass of an empty graduated cylinder.

2. Pour a specific volume of a liquid into the cylinder and measure the total mass.
3. Subtract the mass of the empty cylinder to find the mass of the liquid.
4. Record the volume of the liquid directly from the graduated cylinder.
5. Repeat the process with the other three different liquids.

Results and discussions:

- In here, you’ll discuss and analyze the result you got from the experiments. Discuss how it
helps differentiate between substances, even if they appear similar in size or shape. You
could also focus on the importance of accurate measurement in science. Discuss how
density calculations rely on precise measurements of mass and volume, and how errors in
these measurements can lead to incorrect conclusions. USE YOUR OWN WORDS.
