What is Science?
• From Latin “Scientia” = Knowledge.
• As a process → solving problems, understanding nature, testing answers.
• As a system → acquiring knowledge via the Scientific Method.
• As activity → systematic and methodical way of building knowledge through
observation & experimentation.
• Goal: discover facts, relationships, and create theories to explain them.
What is Technology?
• From Greek “techne” = art, skill, or craft.
• Definition: Application of scientific knowledge, laws, and principles to solve real-
world problems.
• Forms: services, tools, machines, methods, and systems.
• Purpose: makes life easier, improves living conditions, changes the world through
human creativity.
What is Society?
• From Latin “societas” = friendly association with others.
• Definition: A large organized group of people making collective decisions and
sharing responsibilities.
• Features:
– Common interests
– Shared culture & institutions
– Cooperation to achieve goals
Interaction of Science, Technology, and Society
• Science → Technology: Discoveries in science lead to new technologies.
• Technology → Science: Tools and machines make scientific experiments possible.
• Society → Science & Technology: Provides demand, values, and goals that guide
research & innovation.
• Result: Better world, improved living, continuous development.
