PCLink G5 User Manual Page 4 of 98

Parameter Setup Panel

Parameter configurations can be saved and opened using the disk and file icons at the top right of the parameter window.

Parameters can be "Dragged and Dropped" onto gauges. Eg to make a dial gauge show Engine Speed, drag the Engine Speed parameter (found under Triggers), and drop it onto the
gauge.
The gauge's move lock has to be off for this to work.

Properties of each parameter can be accessed by right clicking them and selecting Properties, or double clicking on the parameter.

Name cannot be edited, units are shown depending on settings in the Units tab of the Options Window.
Colour can be selected from a list of colours defined in the Parameters section of the Colour Theme Window.

Display Settings

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 5 of 98

Each parameter has its own properties, when the parameter is logged or displayed on a gauge these properties will be used.
When a parameter is displayed on a gauge the Display properties set above will be used to set up the gauge. Display Minimum and Maximum will be the range shown, Low and High Soft
Warning Value is when the gauge will begin to show the "Soft Warning Colour" (usually orange), similarly, low and high Hard Warning values indicate when the display will show the "Hard
Warning Colour" (usually red). See Colour Themes for details.

For the Oil Pressure parameter shown above:

Normal

Hard Warning

Note: If a warning is not wanted, the soft and/or hard warning values can be set above or below the display minimum or maximum (see Engine Speed parameter properties for an
example)

Logging Display
While logging, or reviewing a log file, these settings will determine how the parameter is scaled. If scaling is set to automatic, then the axis of logging views will be determined by whatever
the minimum and maximum values are, a small buffer is added to each end to help center the plot. For example, if a log file has Engine Speed, and the highest engine speed logged was
7800 rpm, then the time plot will scale to about 8500.

If you change the Scaling to Display Min/Max then the Display Minimum and Display Maximum values above will be used.

· The current section is indicated by a rectangle surrounding the name and duration of the section.
· The current overlay is indicated by a rectangle surrounding the overlay colour and offset time.
· The length of the entire log or the length of the section is shown in the duration column.
· If the section has selected as an overlay, the square will contain the overlay colour.
· If the section has been offset, this time value will be displayed in the offset column.

The following image shows the relationship between the Log File Manager and the Log Views.

Time Plot and Navigator Window showing Lap 1 with Lap 2 and Lap 2 Overlaid

You will notice the current section in the Log File Manager relates to the current (highlighted) section in the navigator. The time plot always displays the highlighted area in the Navigator, in
this case the red trace in the Time Plot is a zoomed in version of the trace in the Navigator over Lap 1.
There are two other traces visible in the Time Plot, these are overlays. In this case 'Lap 2' and 'Lap 3' are overlaid, the colour of the trace relates to the colour inside the square in the Log
File Manager.
The current time is based around the currently selected section. You will see that 0:00 time is aligned with the start of 'Lap 1'.
You will notice there is a second x-axis on the time plot, this is called the Offset Axis. The Offset Axis relates to the Current Overlay

Section overlays can be turned on by clicking the box to the left of the offset value, click the box again to turn the overlay off. If the box contains no colour, then the overlay is turned off.

Changing the Log File

You can change the current log file by either clicking the name of the log file in the Log File Manager or by clicking a section within a log file.
Changing the Section
There are two ways of changing the current section:
· Change the current section by clicking the section name in the Log File Manager.
· Change the current section by double-clicking the section name at the top of the Navigator.

Click the checkered flag icon at the top of the log file manager to select the shortest section / fastest lap.

Changing Overlay Offsets

There are two ways to adjust the offset: numerically or graphically.
To adjust the offset numerically, double click the offset number in the Log File Manager, you will now be able to enter an offset value.
To adjust the offset graphically, click and drag the Offset Axis on the Time Plot to the left or right. As you are dragging the axis you will see the value changing in the log file manager.

You can zero individual offset by right clicking on the specific offset inside the Log File Manager and selecting Zero Offset. All offsets can be set to zero by clicking the Zero Offsets button
at the top of the Log File Manager or by right clicking and selecting Zero All Offsets.

Note: A positive number brings the overlay forward in time and a negative number sends the offset backwards in time.

For information on editing sections and markers, see Editing Log Files.

PCLink G5 User Manual > User Interface > Layouts and Views > Pages
Pages
Layout Pages are designed to allow the user to organise the layout into easy to find categories. Typical pages might be General Purpose Settings, Fuel Tuning, Ignition Tuning etc.
The following image shows the tabs for several created pages.

Tabs

It is important to avoid the temptation to create too many pages as this will become confusing and slow to operate. It is suggested that a 'General Purpose' page is created for most of the
settings. Specific function pages can be created to speed the calibration and tuning of more complicated systems e.g VVT Control.

· To create a new page select Layout > New Page in the drop down menu. Enter a name for the new page and click OK.
· To rename a page click the required tab to make the page active. Select Layout > Rename Page in the drop down menu. Enter the new name for the page and click OK.
· To delete a page click the required tab to make the page active. Select Layout > Delete Page in the drop down menu. Click YES to confirm that you want to delete the page.
· Pages can be dragged by clicking and holding the mouse while moving to the new location.

Shuffling Pages
PCLink G5 User Manual > User Interface > Layouts and Views > Views
Views
Views are windows that are placed onto a page. These can be moved and resized as required. A view may contain a gauge, table, runtime information logging plot or various other
information. The small move icon in the top right of the window can be clicked to lock the views position and size.
The following shows an example view containing runtime values for Fuel. You can see the move icon and close icon in the top right of the panel.

Runtime View

There are three main types of views inside PCLink, a runtime views, settings views and logging views. Each view is outlined as follows:
· Runtime Views - Runtime views show real time information numerically or graphically on ECU parameters and tables. Runtime views do not have the ability to modify any data.
Example: Dial Gauge
· Settings Views - Settings views allow you to change ECU settings, configuration and tables. Example: Fuel Table 1
· Logging Views - Logging views allow you to view log files and analyses log data. Example: Time Plot

Creating Views
When creating views, there are two ways in which they are created. One is where a new panel is created for the view, the other is when the view gets created in an existing panel.
Which method of creation depends on the type of view. The only view that will be created in an existing panel is a settings view.

The settings view will be created in the last focused/clicked on panel. This means that ideally on a page you will have one main settings panel that all settings views get created in. If
you want to have a settings panel that is locked so no other setting can be created inside the panel you can by Locking the Settings Panel.

All views apart from a Settings View are created in its own new panel. The panel can be moved and resized to the appropriate location on the page.

New views are most commonly created by right clicking on an empty area of the page and selecting the type of view to create.

Moving Views
Views can be moved with the mouse by clicking and holding the title bar. Move the mouse to drag the view. If the view won't move, check to see if the view is locked.

Moving Views

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 9 of 98

Resizing Views
Views can be resized with the mouse by clicking and holding edges if the view. Move the mouse to adjust the edges.

Resizing Views

Move Lock
A view's movement can be locked by clicking the move lock icon in the top right corner of the view.

Locking Movement

Settings Lock
Settings panels can have their settings locked inside them. To do this click the small padlock in the top left corner of the view.

Locking a Settings Panel

Now when a request is made to create a new settings panel, it will be created in its own window.

Table Views
While a table is displayed on a settings panel additional icons are displayed to change how the table is displayed.

Change the display mode to a graphical view. For a table this is a surface, for a 2D table the view is a plot.

Change the display mode back to a grid view.

/ Displayed only when a table is drawn as a surface, these icons switch the keyboard arrow key functionality between rotating the view and moving the table editing cell
selection.

Moves the camera back to a predefined 'reset' position, in case you get lost!

Hover the mouse over icons to receive a hint, each of these icons has a keyboard shortcut key.

PCLink G5 User Manual > User Interface > Layouts and Views > Layouts
Layouts
PCLink allows the user to create, modify and save layouts. The layouts can be created, loaded and saved under the Layouts drop down menu.
Each layout consists of pages, these can be created, renamed and deleted under the Layouts drop down menu. Several pages can be created for each layout file. Each page contains
several views. Views are of several types, these range from tables, settings, and runtime values to gauges and 3D surface plots.
Two layouts can be open at any one given time, this is controlled by the Display Mode.

· Creating a layout is simple, select Layout > New Layout in the main drop down menu. The existing layout will be saved and an empty layout created.
· Loading a layout is simple, select Layout > Load Layout in the main drop down menu. The existing layout will be saved, you will be prompted with a window to locate the layout file you
wish to load. Select the layout file and click Open.

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 10 of 98

· By default the layout is saved every time PCLink is closed.

· If you wish to save a layout to a specific file name, selected Layout > Save Layout As.... You will be prompted with a dialog to choose a file name and a location, once you are ready to
save, click Save.

The display mode controls the current layout. There are two display modes available; 'ECU' and 'Log Analysis'. Each display mode has its own layout file, these are saved and named
separately.
The two display modes can be toggled between using the 'Display Mode' drop down menu. This feature is useful for quickly alternating between a logging layout and a tuning layout.
PCLink G5 User Manual > Tuning Operating Procedures > ECU Controls > Connecting to an ECU
Connecting to an ECU
The first step in the process of configuring and tuning an ECU is to establish communications with your G4X or G5 ECU.
Note: If you have problems communicating with the ECU, refer HERE for information on problem solving.

Items Required
You will need the following items to use PCLink software for tuning a Link ECU.
1. A computer running Microsoft Windows 7, 8 or 10. As with any software the higher specification the PC the better, required specs are:
Intel i5 2.0 ghz or better.
4 gb ram or better.
The CPU must be multicore - 2 cores or more quad core recommended.
2. The latest version of PCLink tuning software installed on your PC. This software is available for free download from www.linkecu.com. (under Products -> Software)
3. A Link ECU USB tuning cable (usually supplied with the ECU).
4. Follow the instructions in the installation manual carefully. It is essential that the Link ECU drivers are installed before connecting the ECU to the PC. Driver installation is typically
done as part of the PCLink installation.

USB Connection
To successfully communicate with your ECU via USB you will need to ensure:
ü The PC has the most current Link G4X and G5 USB drivers installed (installed as part of the PCLink install).
ü The ECU is powered up.
ü The G4X or G5 USB tuning cable has been connected.

Connecting to the ECU

Once the physical side of the connection has been setup you should be able to connect to the ECU, there are several ways to do this:
· Press the 'F3' key.
· Press 'Shift' + 'F3' keys to force a search and a full reconnect.
· Select ECU Controls > Connect ECU from the drop down menu.
· Select ECU Controls > Search For ECU from the drop down menu.
· Click the Connection Status in the top right corner of the PCLink window.

PCLink will search and bring up a window showing all ECUs it has found within the search category it has been set to. Once this window has opened select the ECU you would like to
connect to.
If it fails to find or connect to the ECU and the steps above have been followed the next step is to look at the Connection Problems section below.

Connection Status
Connection Status is indicated in the top right of the PCLink window using the graphics below:
· ONLINE - indicates the ECU is connected. The current connection speed is shown to the right of this status.
· OFFLINE - indicates the ECU is not connected.
· Searching - indicates that auto connection mode is active and that PCLink is searching for an ecu to connect to.

Disconnecting
Disconnecting from the ecu means that changes made in PCLink will not be made in the ECU until it is reconnected.
To Disconnect from the ECU do one of the following:
· Press the 'F3' key.
· Click the Connection Status in the top right.
· Select ECU Controls > Connect ECU from the drop down menu.

Saving To The ECU

Store permanently saves the changes made in PCLink to the ECU, this can not be undone. (Unless you have a backup .pclx or .pcl5 file saved).
When making tuning adjustments, changes are made in real time. These changes revert back to their previous setting on ECU power cycle unless a Store has been completed.
To perform a Store do one of the following;
· Press the 'F4' key
· Press the shortcut key (CTRL + S)
· Select ECU Controls > Store to ECU from the drop down menu.

Restore To Factory Settings

The ECU can be reset to factory settings which clears all custom settings and tables, it cannot be undone unless you have a backup .pclx or .pcl5 file saved to load back into the ecu.
To perform a reset select ECU Controls > Restore to Factory Settings from the drop down menu.

PCLink G5 User Manual Page 11 of 98

Connection Options
There are several connection options that can be set to improve the connection process, information on these settings can be found here.

Connection Problems
This section provides information on and solutions to problems encountered communicating with Link G4X or G5 ECUs. The majority of communication problems encountered by Link
technical support are caused by one or more of the issues listed here. It is very infrequent that communication problems can not be resolved.

Can Not Communicate with PCLink

Check that a dash, display or logger is not connected to the ECUs Serial/CAN connector. Disconnect the dash during tuning. Dashes that use serial communications will not allow the ECU
to communicate with PCLink or do a firmware update. Reconnect the dash after tuning. Note that the dash can stay connected if it uses a CAN communication but must not have any wires
connected to the ECUs serial TX/RX pins.

Communication Dropouts and Freezes

Feedback has shown that under certain conditions (usually full power) communications problems can cause the following symptoms:
· ECU disconnects completely from PCLink.
· PCLink freezes momentarily.
· USB communication breaks and won't reconnect until the cable is disconnected or PC is restarted.
The cause of these problems can almost always be traced back to electrical interference. Electrical interference is generated by ignition systems and switching on and off of
solenoids/relays. Under most circumstances USB communications is robust in an automotive environment. Unfortunately, excessive electrical interference can compromise the integrity of
the high speed signals.

If communication problems are still encountered, the following items MUST be checked (NEVER assume they are correct):
· Fit Standard Resistive Spark Plugs - Nearly all ECU communications problems encountered by the Link technical support department are caused by the use of non resistive plugs or
HT leads. Even race plugs that state to be resistive type may not suitable. Remove these plugs and refit after tuning is complete.
· Fit Resistive HT Leads - Non resistive leads are a source of ignition noise and are not suitable for use with most modern ignition systems.
· Check All Grounds - Check all ECU and engine grounds are clean and well connected. Perform measurements if necessary. One installer reported communication problems that
were a result of poor ECU grounding through a main engine loom connector that had been added to allow easy removal of the engine! Another tuner reported issues where the ECU
was grounded to the intake manifold but there was rubber intake manifold insulators!
· Check Wiring and Install of Igniter and Coils - This is particularly important where after market igniters or coils are used. Consider the following points:
1. The igniter must be grounded with an appropriate rated wire to the engine block (and to nowhere else!).
2. Power supply to coils must be fitted with a suppressor.
3. Coils should be positioned to minimise HT lead length.
4. Igniters should be positioned to minimise wiring length to the coils.
5. Igniters designed to ground through their mounting bolts must be mounted to the engine block.
6. If fitting coils from another engine, ensure the mounting frame provides grounding for the metal coil body.
7. Some coils require a ground wire connection from their main connector to the engine block.
· If using a rolling road dyno, grounding the vehicle to the dyno chassis may improve the situation. This can be done using jump starting leads. Also make sure the dyno is properly
grounded (consult an electrician). Several tuners have reported this as a solution to interference issues.

In some instances the problem is not related to electrical interference but rather to the laptop, windows or driver installation. The following solutions have been found to improve
communications problems:
· Check FIFO settings.
· Check USB Power settings (Windows 7 and Vista). Go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Power Options. To the right of your selected power plan select Change Plan Settings.
Select Changed Advanced Power Settings. Scroll down to USB Settings expand it and select USB selective Suspend Setting. Change this to disabled.

FIFO Settings
When using the PC serial port (COM port), some computers have the FIFO setting set incorrectly. This is a Windows driver setting that can be adjusted to alter serial port performance.
Note that this setting may still be used on USB connections to the ECU. With modern PC's, it is not often required to perform this procedure. Do so only if you are having problem
connecting to your Link ECU or have communications drop outs.

The exact procedure to do this will depend on the version of Windows installed and the type of serial port drivers used. Below is a couple of examples of disabling the FIFO buffers.

Windows 7

1. Close PCLink.
2. Click on the Windows logo at the bottom of the screen. When the start menu appears, type "Device Manager" into the search area.
3. Open the device manager. Look down the list for Ports (COM & LPT). Click the + to expand this section.
4. Find the Link USB ECU if using a USB connection or Communication Port (COMx) if using built in serial port. Right click and select properties.

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 12 of 98

5. Select the Port Settings Tab. Click the Advanced button.

6. In the Advanced settings menu, slide both sliders to the left. Note you may need to click the Defaults button to enable the sliders. Click OK to close the window.

7. Click OK to close the Serial Port Properties window.

PCLink G5 User Manual > Tuning Operating Procedures > ECU Controls > Trigger Scope
Trigger Scope
Note: G4X Atom and Monsoon ECUs pre V3.0 only have a digital trigger scope due to hardware differences.

The Trigger Scope function is designed to assist in analysing the signals on Trigger 1 and Trigger 2 pins. This is helpful for:

· Determining the correct arming voltage settings.

· Ensuring that the correct trigger pattern has been selected.
· Providing feedback to technical support staff for diagnostics.

The Trigger Scope is only available on selected Link ECUs.

NOTE: The Trigger Scope is only a basic oscilloscope with limited measuring precision. It is designed to give a quick indication of the presence and quality of trigger signals. A high quality
purpose built oscilloscope should be used if more accurate measurements are required.

The Trigger Scope uses digital sampling technology to take high speed samples of the signals.

Trigger Scope Form

The following functions are provided for operating the Trigger Scope:

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 13 of 98

· Capture - Starts a sample, download and display sequence.

· Save - Saves the data to a log file.
· Help - Opens this help page.
· Triggers, DI and Trigger 1 State Tabs to show the basic trigger signals, VVT Signals and trigger decoding state respectively.

Tips for Trigger Scope use

· Trigger Scope is going to try and capture a minimum of 720° (degrees) of crank revolution, the total period captured will depend upon the RPM the ECU is reading.
· When using Trigger Scope it is necessary to setup some fields in the Trigger Setup before using trigger scope. Fields to setup before hand include Trigger Type, Trigger Position and
Trigger Pull-ups. If the ECU is displaying inaccurate RPM information the Trigger Scope will not work correctly.
· The sample the Trigger Scope captures is started from when the Capture button is clicked.

AC and DC Coupling
· The Trigger Scope uses AC coupling when the trigger channel is set to Reluctor. This means that in the unusual case where there is a DC offset in the trigger signal due to a wiring error
it may not be visible on the Trigger Scope.
· The Trigger Scope uses DC coupling when the trigger channel is set to Optical/Hall.

Using the Trigger Scope Set Arming Voltages

For reluctor type trigger signals the Trigger scope can be used to determine the correct arming voltage. The procedure to find the correct arming voltage at a particular RPM is as follows:
1. Run the engine at the desired RPM.
2. Click Capture to take a trigger sample. The trigger scope will automatically set the V/Div and Time/Div for the appropriate sensor type and engine speed.
3. Find the smallest height pulse on the trigger 1 or 2 signal.
4. Zoom in on the smallest pulse.
5. Measure the peak amplitude above zero volts of the signal as in the picture below. Use the V/Div number to count determine the peak voltage. In the diagram below the Peak voltage is
three divisions at 2V per division. The peak voltage is 6 Volts.
6. The required arming voltage is half the peak voltage. So in the diagram, the correct arming voltage is 3 Volts.

Setting Arming Voltage From the

Trigger Scope

Note: ECU Logging is Paused while the Trigger Scope form is open.

PCLink G5 User Manual > Tuning Operating Procedures > ECU Controls > Firmware Updater
Firmware Updater
The Firmware Updater allows new versions of firmware to be installed in the ECU.Firmware is the software (code or program) that runs inside the ECU. Periodically new versions are
released with new features and fixes. It is recommended to run the latest version firmware in your ECU. However, updating an ECUs firmware can be time consuming as all new settings
must be checked.

The Firmware Updater can be launched by selecting Firmware Update in the ECU Controls drop down menu.

Note: In general a firmware update will not change the engines tune, however it is NOT recommended to do a firmware update without having the tune checked on a dyno. Occasionally
new features are introduced that if not set up correctly could result in engine damage.

Note: Firmware updating will overwrite your existing firmware but will retain tuning information.

Note: It is recommended to save a copy of your tune (.pclx file for G4X, .pcl5 for G5) before doing a firmware update. This can be done by connecting to the ECU then pressing F2. This
will allow you to restore your tune exactly should you decide to go back to the same firmware version again (or install it into another ECU with the same firmware).

Please read the firmware version notes carefully as they outline new features and fixes for all ECU Firmware versions. Make sure to read EVERY change, fix and new feature since the
ECUs current firmware version. Make sure you understand these changes and take the necessary steps to check and set up all new features after the firmware update.
Note: The firmware upgrade process cannot be started until the notes have been read.
Note: If your ECU has a CAN/Serial port make sure anything connected to the port is disconnected before commencing a firmware update. Re-connect the port once the firmware update
is finished.
Note: If Configuration -> Connection Speed is set to 'Slow' in the ECU this can cause issues with updating the firmware, change this to fast, store and then power cycle before attempting a

The ECU Unlock window is used to enable an ECU when it is new.

For security reasons ECUs are shipped in a locked state. The user is able to configure the ECU, but the engine will not start. The unlock code must be generated by the official link dealer
who originally supplied the ECU. Link ECU cannot supply this unlock code. Unlock the ECU by entering the supplied unlock code into the 'Unlock Code' box and selecting 'Unlock'. A Store
should then be performed.

Note: The ECU may need to have its power supply cycled before the ECU feature will become enabled.

Ethrottle TPS Calibration

Ethrottle must be set to 'Setup Mode' or 'Disabled' mode
The PWM Output must be set to the correct pair of auxiliary pins.
The Ethrottle Relay must be set to the correct output pin.
TPS (Main) Source and TPS (Sub) Source must be set to the correct input pins with appropriate error values set.

Select ECU Controls -> TPS Setup OR Double click 'TPS Calibration' (In the Throttle Position Sensor settings window) , the ecu should attempt to move the throttle-body to it's limits in
both directions.
If the 'H-Bridge polarity is reversed' error occurs the polarity can be changed by either swapping the Ethrottle + and - wires around or by changing the appropriate Auxiliary Active State
(e.g. Aux 9 Active State when using Aux9/10 as the EThrottle output).
A more detailed explanation of the EThrottle TPS calibration can be found here.

PCLink G5 User Manual > Tuning Operating Procedures > ECU Controls > MAP Sensor Calibration
MAP Sensor Calibration
PCLink has a MAP sensor calibration feature intended for use every time a new map sensor is installed.

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 16 of 98

The MAP sensor calibration uses the barometer (usually the built in one unless an external one has been setup) and uses an offset to make the MAP reading match it. This process fails if
the difference between the two is greater than 5kpa. This indicates that either the wrong calibration values are being used for the MAP sensor or the MAP sensor is faulty/damaged. MAP
sensors can often be damaged by water vapor from the engine if installed incorrectly and some map sensors can be damaged by incorrect wiring.

To calibrate a map sensor:

1. Ensure the BAP (barometer) is set up correctly for your application
2. Ensure the MAP sensor is set up correctly with the right calibration values
3. select ECU Controls -> MAP Sensor Calibration, you should get the window below

MAP Calibration Window

4. select Yes and if everything is set up correctly you should get the window shown below

MAP Calibration Success Window

If you don't get the success window and get the error window below instead you will need to double check your MAP and BAP settings and test your MAP sensor to ensure it is working
properly, if you continue to have issues contact Link Tech Support.

Password protection allows the tuner to lock out others from viewing or modifying the settings/tables and statistics.

Enabling Password Protection

To activate password protection click 'Setup Password Protection' under the 'ECU Controls' drop down menu. The following form will be made visible

Enter Password Window - Enable Protection

Enter a password at least 3 characters or digits long.

Disabling Password Protection

To disable password protection click 'Unlock Password Protection' under the 'ECU Controls' drop down menu.

Enter Password Window - Disable Protection

Enter the password used to protect the ECU. All protection will then be disabled. If the Temporary Unlock check box is ticked then the ECU will not be permanently unlocked. Instead
it will only be unlocked until next time PCLink disconnects.

Note: A base map with password protection can still be saved and then loaded into another ECU. To prevent this use password protection with Save as Encrypted.

Note: If you do not have the original password that locked the ECU, the only way to unlock it is to use ECU Controls->Restore to Factory Settings. This will erase ALL tuning and
configuration information and load default settings. Be careful doing this while the ECU is connected to a vehicle as inputs and outputs may change state due to being configured to their
default state.

PCLink G5 User Manual > Tuning Operating Procedures > Tuning Views > Quick Tune
Quick Tune
Quick Tune is an interactive tuning tool that assists in time efficient tuning of the main fuel table. A graphical display of Target Lambda/AFR (desired) and Actual Lambda/AFR (measured)
is provided. A Multi pointer gauge allows the tuner to quickly see how close Actual Lambda/AFR is to the Target Lambda/AFR. Quick Tune can be setup to operate over the entire fuel
table or just over a particular area. Quick Tune can be used in Manual or Automatic modes. In Manual mode, Quick Tune guides you to cell centering and advises you when is a suitable
time to make a fuel table adjustment. With the press of a key a calculated adjustment is made. Often only one or two adjustments are required to tune each cell. In Automatic mode Quick
Tune does all the adjustment work for you. This leaves the tuner free to operate the Dyno or perform other tuning work such as making ignition table adjustments.

NOTE:
· Quick Tune only tunes fueling. It does NOT tune ignition.
· Quick Tune is designed to assist professional tuners not to substitute the use of professional tuners.
· All other ECU functions including ignition and boost control should be tuned before using Quick Tune.
· Closed Loop Lambda should be turned off before using Quick Tune.

Understanding the Quick Tune Display

The Quick tune panel provides the following controls:

· Target - This is the desired Lambda/AFR from the Lambda/AFR Target Table.
· Measured - This is the average and filtered Lambda/AFR as measured from the selected wideband oxygen sensor sources. See below for more details.
· Status - This provides information about the state of Quick Tune operation. The following status information may be displayed:
· Ready - The cell is centred and adjustment can be made.
· Target Reached - The cell has been tuned (automatic mode). Pressing the 0 Button (or F11) will reset this state.
· Not in Cell Centre - The engine is not operating near enough to a cell centre to make an adjustment. How close you need to be to a cell centre can be adjusted in the setting panel. See
below.
· Waiting - Waiting for Lambda/AFR to stabilise before determining if it is correct. The wait time can be defined in the settings panel.
· No WB Source - WB channels are not set up correctly.
· ECT Lockout - ECT is not above the lockout value in the settings panel.
· Load Lockout - Load (MAP, MGP, TPS) is not within the range set in the settings panel.
· RPM Lockout - RPM (MAP, MGP, TPS) is not within the range set in the settings panel.
· Gauge - The gauge shows the relationship between target and measured Lambda/AFR. The top pointer shows actual measured Lamda/AFR while the bottom pointer shows target
Lambda/AFR. The idea is that when fueling is tuned, the two pointers will be in the same place.
· Mode - This selects the operating mode of Quick Tune.
· Off - Quick Tune will not operate at all.
· Manual - Quick tune will guide you to cell centering but an adjustment will not be made until the "Tune Active Cell" button (or F10) is pressed.
· Automatic - In automatic mode Quick Tune takes over adjustment of the fuel table. Pressing F10 will start and stop tuning.

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 18 of 98

· Tune Cell / Start Tune Button - The function of this button changes depending on the current mode. In Automatic mode this button starts and stops the automated tuning process. In
Manual mode, this button will make an adjustment to the main fuel table in an attempt to make the target and actual Lambda/AFR match.
· Reset Cell Button - This is used to zero any adjustment to a fuel table cell allowing Quick Tune to have another attempt at tuning that cell.
· Help - This help page
· Show Settings - Makes the setup information visible or hidden. See below for details on the setup options.

Setting up Quick Tune

Before Quick Tune can be used it must be configured for the particular application. Configuration settings can be hidden away once sorted to allow a smaller Quick Tune panel for more
efficient use of the screen. To make the Quick Tune settings visible click on the Show Settings check box below the Help button. When altering a value in the Quick Tune setup form make
sure to press enter after entering the new value.

The following list details each adjustment:

· Fuel Table - This list allows the user to select which fuel table is to be tuned.
· Measured WB Oxy Sources - This list shows all the wideband sources. If more than one wideband source is available Lambda Avg can be selected.
· Filter - Used to dampen fluctuation or noisy Lambda/AFR signals. A higher number will result in more damping. A filter number of 1 means no damping.
· Gauge Minimum - The minimum value displayed by the gauge.
· Gauge Maximum - The maximum value displayed by the gauge.
· Precision - Sets how close in Lambda/AFR a cell needs to be to its target value to be considered tuned. eg If target is 1.00 and Precision is 0.05 Quick tune will consider the cell tuned if
actual Lambda is within 0.95 to 1.05 Lambda.
· Time in Cell Centre - This is the stabilising time in seconds. This sets how long Quick Tune will wait for the mixture to stabilise once all other conditions are met.
· Load Centre Tolerance - This is how close the load value (usually Manifold Gauge Pressure) must be to the centre of the cell before Quick Tune considers the cell to be within its tunable
range.
· RPM Centre Tolerance - This is how close engine RPM must be to the centre of the cell before Quick Tune considers the cell to be within its tuneable range.
· Tune Ahead - This setting instructs Quick Tune to copy the tuned cell numbers to other cells. This allows numbers to be copied down, right or both. This creates a closer number in un-
tuned cells and provides a flatter fuel table while tuning for more precision.
· Tune Ahead Trim - This setting is the percentage increase applied to the cells generated by tune ahead. If the current cell was at 50, and the Tune Ahead Trim was set to 5% with Tune
Ahead set to 'Fill Right and Down', the cells to the bottom and right would be set to 52.5, the next cells further away from the tuning cell would be set to 55 and so on (57.5, 60, 62.5 ....).
· RPM Lockout Upper - Quick Tune will not operate above this RPM.
· RPM Lockout Lower - Quick Tune will not operate below this RPM. e.g. to avoid Quick Tune working at idle, set this value above idle, say 1000 RPM.
· Load Lockout Upper - Quick Tune will not operate above this load.
· Load Lockout Lower - Quick Tune will not operate below this load. e.g. to avoid Quick Tune working in the overrun row set to -80 kPa MGP or (20 kPa MAP) to make it work to full
vacuum, set to -100 kPa MGP (or 0 kPa MAP).
· ECT Lockout - Sets the lowest engine temperature that Quick Tune will operate. Set this to a high enough temperature that all warm up enrichment fuel will be 0%.
· Max Auto Attempts - This is the number of times Quick Tune will try to adjust a cell before giving up. Usually one to three attempts are required.

Before using Quick Tune the following checks must be done:

1. Set up the Target Lambda/AFR table as required. Make sure the following items are correct:
· The table axis parameters. These are typically RPM on the X axis and MGP on the Y axis.
· The table has the appropriate rows and columns required to allow it to cover all areas the motor may operate in.
· Enter appropriate Target Lambda/AFR values in all cells.
2. Install, wire and calibrate wideband oxygen sensors. This includes assigning an Analog Channel and setting up that channels calibration. Quick Tune relies heavily on this input being
correct. Only Analog Channels assigned as Lambda will be available to Quick Tune.
3. Open the Quick Tune Setup panel (by clicking the Show Settings check box) and adjust all settings to suitable values before switching Quick Tune to Manual or Automatic modes. The
settings shown above are suitable starting values.
4. Select the required wideband channels in the Measured WB Oxy Sources list. Check that the Actual Lambda/AFR number and gauge show the correct reading.

Using Tune Ahead in Fill Right and Down Mode

When using Quick Tune in Fill Right and Down mode, each time a cell is tuned, all cells to the right and down are filled with an increasing number. The rate at which the numbers increase
is set by the Tune Ahead Trim setting. Each time a Tune Ahead operation is done, the final number of the actual cell being tuned by Quick Tune is remembered. Upon tuning the next cell
a Fill Right and Down will only be performed if the final tuned number is greater than the previously remembered number. This prevents accidental overwriting of numbers in the table when
going back to lower load/RPM.

Operating Quick Tune in Manual Mode

Manual mode is designed to assist the tuner in tuning the fuel table while completely under their control. No adjustments are made to the fuel table without the tuners say so. Manual mode
greatly reduces the time taken to tune individual cells and also allows the tuner to be working on other areas such as ignition timing while still being able to adjust fueling.

To operate Quick Tune in Manual mode:

1. Carefully read and understand all information further up this page. Set all Quick Tune settings appropriately before starting.
2. Display the main fuel table.
3. Press F10 to open the Quick Tune window if it is not already displayed.

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 19 of 98

4. Ensure that the engine is operating above the ECT Lockout value.
5. Under controlled conditions (eg on a Dyno) run the engine so that load and RPM are within the range specified in the setup panel.
6. Select Manual Mode in the Quick Tune window.
7. If everything is operating correctly you should see the status alternating between Not in Cell Centre, Waiting and Ready as the cross hairs move around the table.
8. Centre the cross hairs in a cell so the status says Ready.
9. Press F10 to make an adjustment. The cell will change to a blue colour to indicate its value has been changed and the status will say Waiting while the mixture is allowed to stabilise.
10. At the end of the Waiting time if the AFR is close to the target (within the range set by the precision adjustment) the cell will go green to indicate that it is tuned.
11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 until the cell has gone green. It will typically only take one to three adjustments.
12. Move on to the next cell and repeat steps 9 onwards.

Operating Quick Tune in Automatic Mode

Automatic mode is designed to automate the fuel table tuning process. It is not designed to replace an experienced tuner, nor is it designed to completely tune the engine (as it does fuel
only). Quick Tune can be used to tune the fuel table from one cell to the next in any direction but is essentially designed to tune from the top left to the bottom right of the fuel table going
across the rows or down the columns. Automatic mode works exactly the same as Manual mode except that the tuner is not required to indicate when an adjustment should be made,
Quick Tune does this for you.

To operate Quick Tune in Automatic mode:

1. Carefully read and understand all information further up this page. Set all Quick Tune settings appropriately before starting.
2. Display the main fuel table.
3. Press F10 to open the Quick Tune window if it is not already displayed.
4. Ensure that the engine is operating above the ECT Lockout value.
5. Under controlled conditions (eg on a Dyno) run the engine so that load and RPM are within the range specified in the setup panel.
6. Select Automatic Mode in the Quick Tune window.
7. If everything is operating correctly you should see the status alternating between Not in Cell Centre, Waiting and Ready as the cross hairs move around the table.
8. Press F10 to start automatic mode.
9. Centre the cross hairs in a cell. Quick Tune will adjust the cells value until the target Lambda/AFR is reached. It may be necessary to change the Precision, Time in Cell Centre, Filter
and Max Auto Attempts setting to achieve the best Quick Tune operation for your application.
10. Once the state shows Target Reached, move on to the next cell. The tune process will repeat.
11. If for some reason you want a cell to be retuned, centre the cross hairs in that cell and press F11.

Using Quick Tune Shortcut Keys

· F10 - Display Quick Tune Window if not visible

· F10 - Make a fuel table adjustment in Manual Mode
· F10 - Start/Stop Quick Tune in Auto Mode
· F11 - Reset the current cells tune state
· F9 - Reset tuning markers in all tables
· Z - Mark/unmark a cell as tuned
· Y - Mark/unmark a cell as part tuned

Operating Quick Tune with Tune Ahead

· In automatic mode when a full fuel table is to be tuned, it is most efficient to use the Tune Ahead setting set to 'Copy across and down'. When this setting is on, hold the engine speed
constant and tune down each RPM column by adjusting the load.
· If the fuel table numbers are a long way from ideal, Quick Tune will need to make large adjustments to the fuel table numbers. This may result in large number changes between
adjacent cells. To prevent the engine moving into cells that are a long way from tuned (potentially harmfully lean), use the Tune Ahead function as described above.
· The required Time in Cell Centre depends on the placement of the wideband sensor and the type of sensor/controller used.

PCLink G5 User Manual > Tuning Operating Procedures > Tuning Views > Mixture Map
Mixture Map
The mixture map is a tool used to help tune your fuel table based on information gathered in a log file.

Example Mixture Map

Each cell in a mixture map contains the following information:

· ACT (Actual) - this is the average of the measured samples when the engine was operating inside this cell.
· TRG (Target) - this is the target lambda/Air to Fuel Ratio (AFR) for this particular cell.
· SMP (Samples) - this is the number of samples recorded when the engine was operating inside this cell.
· ERR (Error) - this is the error between the target lambda/AFR and the measured lambda/AFR.

The cell colour provides important information:

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 20 of 98

· A lush green colour represents low error.

· A deep red colour represents high error.
· There is a 8 step colour gradient between these two colours. e.g. a yellow colour represents a mid error.
· A sky blue colour shows the cell has been used to make a correction to the fuel table.

The AFR/Lambda range that the colours represent is defined by the Highlight Range setting.

The mixture map can be re-calculated at any time by right clicking and selecting Update Mixture Map or clicking the 'Update Mixture Map' text at the top left of the window. Note that the
blue cell markings will be cleared.

Corrective changes can be applied to the fuel table by double clicking a cell, the mixture map will calculate the correction automatically. Alternatively you can right click and select Correct
Fuel Table.

How to use Mixture Map

The steps below are a guide on how to use Mixture Map.

1. Open Mixture Map by Clicking Tuning > Mixture Map

2. Setup the Mixture Map - Properties window. If you unsure on the settings to use refer to the 'Setting up Mixture Map' section below. Click OK.
3. Press F8 to start recording a PC Log, move through the different cells in the fuel table by altering the engines RPM and load.
4. Press F8 again to stop the PC Log recording. Click 'Update Mixture Map' at the top left corner of the window.
5. The cells in the Mixture Map window that contain recorded data from the log will now display in a range of colours from green to red.
6. To have Mixture Map correct the fuel table in a certain area, double click a coloured cell in the Mixture Map. Proceed with all the cells you wish to change.
7. Open the fuel table and check that Mixture Map has correctly applied the changes to the corresponding cells.

Tuning Notes

· Use Mixture Map to tune a section of the fuel table at a time, maybe one or two rows or columns.
· Once Mixture Map has a tuned a section of the fuel table it is recommended to repeat the process in the same section so that the new difference between the actual and target
lambda/AFR can be checked.
· If you get no data upon clicking 'Update Mixture Map' check the properties of the Mixture Map. Also check the PC Logging settings to make sure the required data is being recorded.
· Remember to do a Store (F4) to save the changes to the ECU.

Setting Up The Mixture Map

Setting up the mixture map correctly will provide excellent tuning results, where as a poor setup may not.

An example mixture map setup window

To setup a mixture map the following conditions need to be met.
· Either an ECU must be connected or a configuration file open.
· A log file must be open.
· Both the AFR/Lambda Target table and the Fuel Table must have an x and a y axis.

Once the above conditions have been met you will need to define the following:
· Fuel Table - select the fuel Table to be tuned.
· Highlight Range - the AFR/Lambda range to span the cell colours across.
· RPM Source - select the log files RPM channel.

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 21 of 98

· Wideband Source - select the wideband channel where the mixture map can get lambda/AFR data from.
· Fuel Load Source - select the log files fuel load source - this must match the selected fuel table.
· Target Load Source - select the log files target load source - this must match the lambda/AFR target table.

On completion of selecting these channels you may generate a mixture map, however improvements can be made to the mixture map by enabling some filters.

The following filters are provided:

· Minimum Samples - enabling this filter allows you to specify the minimum amount of samples required before the cell will be populated with information.
· Active Zone Area - this filter discards samples outside the specified percentage around the zone centre. E.g. if this was set to 50%, the samples will only be considered if they fall
within 50 percent of the distance from the cell centre to any cell edge.
· Condition Filters - a conditional filter allows you to discard samples based on whether another logged parameter is below or above a predefined value. E.g. TPS > 15 - this means
that samples will only be included if the TPS is greater than 15%.
· Transient Filters - a transient filter allows you to discard samples based on the change in another logged parameter. E.g. TPS < 50% - this means that samples will be included if
TPS is changing at a rate less than 50% per second.
Note: Filter settings can be stored, but not applied by leaving the enable checkbox unchecked.

Control over what is displayed in the mixture map can be adjusted by the checkboxes relating to the four different data items:
· Actual
· Target
· Samples
· Error
PCLink G5 User Manual > Tuning Operating Procedures > Tuning Views > Knock Audio
Knock Audio
The Knock Audio function is a feature to help identify knock sensor frequency. It is able to analyze the audio output of the Knock Amplifier and help determine the correct frequency filter
for your knock sensor. The Knock Audio function does this by using the audio output from the Knock Amplifier and inputting it into your PCs sound card. The audio signal is then visually
represented on the screen to help identify the frequency at which knock is being measured.

· Setting up Knock Audio

· Using Knock Audio
· Detecting Engine Knock
· Knock Audio Fault Finding

Setting up Knock Audio

1. Connect the Knock Amplifiers (or KnockBlock) audio output to the PCs microphone input using a double ended 3.5mm audio cable.
2. Open the Knock Audio window (PCLink > Tuning > Knock Audio).
3. Select the Audio Input Device you have the Knock Amplifier connected to.
4. Select the Waterfall draw rate. This controls the rate at which the Knock Audio visual display is re-drawn at, set this to fast. If you encounter problems with your PC being too slow drop
the rate back to medium or slow. Press OK.

Using Knock Audio

WARNING

Knock can potentially damage an engine, extreme care must be taken. Link will take no responsibility for any damage caused to an engine when configuring Knock Audio or Knock
Control. It is the tuners responsibility to take all measures to protect the engine and users.

1. Make sure the display mode is set to Sampled. Start your engine up, and make sure the ignition timing is conservative. Click the record button in the Knock Audio window and increase
engine RPM to above idle (1500 to 200 RPM on most applications). Adjust the volume slider to the point where the peaks of the signal are reaching the area between the first and
second line from the center.

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 22 of 98

2. Change the display mode to Waterfall. Click the stop button to stop the image recording. Look at the display and compare it to the two images below to help determine if the knock
sensor type is a narrow-band or wide-band sensor. Adjusting the contrast can make the image easier to interpret.

Narrow-band Knock sensor

A narrow-band knock sensor will display as a thin band of colour occurring at

a particular frequency. A lot of factory knock sensors are narrow band
sensors as they are selected to match the knock frequency of the engine.

If the Knock Audio waterfall display has a single band of colour, look at the y
axis of the waterfall display to determine the frequency it occurs at. In this
example image the frequency is at approximately 7 kHz.

The frequency filter on the Knock Amplifier or Link ECU can now be setup to
match the frequency determined.

Note: Some narrow-band knock sensors, known as second harmonic knock

sensors, operate at a frequency above 10 kHz. To expand the viewable
frequency range in the waterfall display drag the top or bottom edge of the
Knock Audio window.

Wide-band Knock sensor

A wide-band knock sensor will cause the Knock Audio waterfall display to
show an image that contains colour (noise) at a wide range of frequencies.
This makes it difficult to determine the correct frequency filter to select when
setting up a Knock Amplifier or Link ECU.

There are two solutions to this problem. The first solution is best as it does
not risk engine damage. Use of the second method is at the tuners risk.

· Use the calculation method for determining the knock frequency of the
engine:

Knock Resonant Frequency (Khz) = 1800/(3.14 * piston diameter in mm)

or

· Take a screen capture of the waterfall display with the engine running
conservative ignition timing. Then record another waterfall display image
with the timing very momentarily advanced enough to cause light engine
knock. Compare the two waterfall display images, the second image
should have colour (noise) in a frequency range the first image does not.
Where this colour occurs is the frequency range the engine knock is
occurring at.

The frequency filter on the Amplifier or Link ECU can now be setup to match
the frequency determined.

Detecting Engine Knock

If engine knock occurs this will be visible in the waterfall display as the colour pink, the intensity of the knock will correspond to the amount of pink that shows in the image. In order for the
engine knock to show correctly the contrast slider must be adjusted so that normal engine noise does not show up as pink. The image below is an example of engine knock being present
in the waterfall view.

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 23 of 98

Right clicking on an area in the waterfall view and selecting 'Show FFT for point' will cause that 'vertical slice' of the waterfall view to be displayed as a Fast Fourier Transform image. This
is useful to help analyse the noise that Knock Audio is receiving. The FFT image below is from the point where pink is showing in the image up. As you can see there in the FFT image,
there is a sharp spike in noise intensity in the 5 to 7 kHz range.

Holding the shift key while pressing the left or right arrow key will cause the FFT view to move one 'vertical slice' of the waterfall view to the left or right. This is useful when trying to identify
a very brief period of engine knock.

Knock Audio Fault Finding

· If you can not obtain a suitable level of signal in the Sampled view by using the Knock Audio volume slider you may need to adjust the Knock Amplifier or PCs main volume control.
· If you can not obtain a signal in the Knock Audio confirm that the signal is reaching the PC correctly by listening for the engine noise through your PC speakers. On some versions of
windows this involves changing your microphone properties in control panel.
· If you have a large spike in the FFT view that is always present (even without the engine knocking) it is possible that you are picking up external noise. Check the Knock system wiring,
confirming that the shielding, GND and signal are connected correctly. See Knock Inputs for more detail on knock sensor wiring.
· Some older PCs and laptops have inferior sound-cards that are unable to produce the volume or sound quality required for Knock Audio. If you are unable to resolve problems with noise
try another PC or laptop.

warning ticks. If High Hard Warning was set to 90, High Soft Warning set to 75, minimum 0 and maximum 100, the gauge would have High Soft Warning ticks from 75 through to
90 then High Hard Warning Ticks from 90 to 100.

· Decimal Places - The decimal places property specifies the number of decimal places that will displayed on the gauge. If decimal places was set to 1, and the current value was
90, the value displayed would be 90.0.
· Multiplier - The multiplier allows you to apply division/multiplication to the parameters units value. Options include /100, /10, x1, x10, x100, x1000. If the current value was
3500RPM and a multiplier was set to x100 the following would be displayed on the gauge 35 RPMx100. Ticks would be marked with 30, 40, 50... etc (depending on other
settings).
· Colour - The colour property allows you to change the colour theme applied to each gauge. Colours help the user quickly identify individual gauges on a page.

Table Features

Row and Column Labels

These are the parameter values that each row and column is centred at.These can be altered by right clicking on the table and selecting Axis Setup or by pressing the X key. Note that not
all tables have configurable rows and columns.

Cross Hairs
The cross hairs show exactly where in the table the engine is operating. When the cross hairs are exactly in the centre of a cell, then the value used by the ECU is the number in that cell.

Snake Trail
The snake trail shows exactly where in the table you have been. The snake trail holds a fixed number of samples and will erase its tail to avoid drawing all over the table. The snake trail
can be paused or turned on/off using the F6 key.

Active Cell
The active cell is the cell in the table that currently has the most influence. It is the cell that the cross hairs are currently closest to the centre of. Note that the actual value used from the
table is interpolated when the cross hair is between cells.

Editing Cells
The editing cell is the cell that you want to change. Its value can be changed by simply typing a new value or using the Q, A, Page Up or Page Down keys. The currently selected row and
column are highlighted in the row and column labels. The editing cell can be moved by clicking or using the arrow keys. The cells currently being edited are surrounding by a bounding
rectangle. Normally only one cell is selected for editing but the selection size can be changed by holding SHIFT and clicking, or using the arrow keys. Once multiple cells are selected they
can be altered as a single block. This is an extremely powerful feature and can reduce the time required to tune tables. Single cell and block editing functions include:
· Change block to value (just type in a new value).
· Maths functions (add, subtract, multiply, divide, alter by percentage).
· Copy the block up, down, left, right (Ctrl + arrows).
· Fill left, right, up and down to end of row/column (Ctrl + F to fill right).
· Interpolation (Ctrl + I) and extrapolation.
· Copy/Paste (Ctrl + C, Ctrl + P).

To select an entire row, click on the row label on the left. To select an entire column, click on the column label at the top. To select the entire table, click the area at the top left of the row
and column labels.

Active cell tracking can be enabled to allow the editing cell to automatically follow the active cell. Press the SPACE key to jump the editing cell to the active cell.

Logged Value Cross Hairs

The logged value cross hairs will be visible if a log file is open. They relate to the currently selected log file. They show the position in the table at the current time in the log file. Moving the
log cursor to see where in the table the engine was operating at that point in the log. Some important points about the logged value cross hairs:
· The connected ECU or open file must match the ECU that the log file came from.
· The log file must contain samples for the parameters used on the axis of the table (eg if a table uses RPM/MAP then the RPM and MAP must have been logged).

Marked Cells
Cells can be marked in a variety of ways. Each way suits a particular tuning purpose. The colours used to mark cells can be configured in Options->Colour Theme. Available markers are:
· Runtime Marker (Marker Colour, Red default) - This marker is used to tag a particular cell for future reference at runtime. For example, it may be used during a road test or dyno pull
to tag where a misfire occurs. Press the B key to place runtime marker. The runtime marker will be placed at the current active cell position. Note that a marker will also be placed in
the log file if PC logging is currently recording. The N key can be used to add/remove in individual runtime marker in a table.
· Changed Cell Marker (Value Changed Colour, Aqua default) - This is used to indicate that the value of a cell has been changed from its original value.
· Part Tuned Marker - Use this marker to indicate that a cell has been tuned but perhaps not to is exact final value. Press the Y key to place/remove a part tuned marker. Note that
Quick Tune also places these markers during automated tuning.
· Tuned Marker - Use this marker to indicate that a cell has been completely tuned to its final value. Press the Z key to place/remove a tuned marker. Note that Quick Tune also
places these markers during automated tuning. Once a cell is marked as tuned Quick Tune will not try to retune it. This can be used to prevent quick tune from attempting to change
cells you are already happy with.

To clear the markers on a table, select the table and press Shift + M. Or right click on the table, select Cell Markers->Clear Tuning Table Markers.
To clear all markers on ALL tables, press the F9 key or select Tuning ->Reset Markers or right click on the table, select Cell Markers->Clear All Table Markers.

To determine what markers apply to a particular cell, right click on the cell and select Cell Markers. The appropriate markers will have a check mark beside them.

Even though a cell may have more than one marker, it will only be coloured with the highest priority marker. The order of priority is Runtime Marker (Highest), Tuned, Part Tuned, Changed
(Lowest).

Keyboard Shortcuts
Nearly all table features can be operated from the keyboard, for a complete list of table editing keys, refer to the Keyboard Shortcuts.

Tables have special functions that speed up tuning time. To access these functions right click on the table.

Colour Gradient Map

Press the H key to toggle colour gradient mode. Note that the colours used for the gradient map can be configured in Options->Colour Theme. The theme colours used are Gradient Low,
Gradient Middle and Gradient High.

Interpolation
Interpolation can either be performed vertically, horizontally or bi-directionally. Interpolation means adjust the values between the edges of selection to make a straight line, the edges used
depends on the interpolation type.

Interpolation Examples

Extrapolation
Extrapolation is used to continue an existing trend in one direction. If you select a row of cells, and select extrapolate down, the cells below will follow the same slope as the one between
the selection and the immediate cell above. The following example illustrates this:

Creating a Table Graph

Graphing provides a powerful visual representation of 2D and 3D tables. This section provides an outline of the two and three dimensional graphs available.

Any active table can be viewed as a graph by:

· Pressing keyboard shortcut K
· Selecting 'Show Table Graph' in the right mouse button popup menu.
· Pressing the Table Graph Icon

You can force a table to open by shift + clicking on it in the ECU Settings menu on the left.

Shift + F and Shift + I force new fuel and ignition tables to open, even if these tables already exist in the layout page.

Table graphs maintain all table functions except snake trail. The user can click on cells then use standard table tuning functions to interpolate, increase/decrease, copy paste and select
cells.

A list of table keyboard shortcuts can be found under Keyboard Shortcuts.

Using the 2D Table Graph

A 2D graph is displayed only for 2D table. (e.g., RPM Limit, Crank Enrichment or Trigger Arming Voltages).
The editing cell is represented as an upside down triangle, the user can select cells by clicking on them directly, or clicking and dragging over a group. Hovering the mouse over a cell will
reveal its exact value.
2D table graph cells can be dragged up and down with the left mouse button.
Crosshairs are displayed as circles.

2D Table Graph

Using the 3D Table Graph

A 3D Surface graph is suited for viewing a 3D table. (e.g., Fuel Map, Ignition Map or Trigger Arming Voltages).

3D Surface Plot of a Table

Except for the snake trail, all existing table functions work on the surface graph of a table. The user can edit cell values just like a grid table. By default keyboard arrow keys move the
editing cell selection, by pressing '\' the arrow keys change functionality and now rotate the surface.

Left mouse click on an intersection on the surface plot selects a cell, clicking and dragging selects a group. This will make the selection become the editing cell in the on the table. The
surface can be navigated with the mouse, mouse movement while the right mouse button is pressed and held rotates the surface. The surface can be zoomed with the scroll function on
the mouse.

PCLink G5 User Manual > Tuning Operating Procedures > Tables > Quick Trim
Quick Trim
Quick Trim provides a means of performing a calculated adjustment on a Fuel Table cell given a Target (desired) and Actual (measured) Lambda/AFR. The intention of this function is to
assist in tuning high power engines where it is not practical to hold them at a constant load/RPM while tuning.

Quick Trim Window

To use Quick Trim a tuner will perform the following steps:

1. Perform a dyno run to determine the actual Lambda/AFR. This is usually done by plotting Lambda/AFR on the dyno plot.
2. Select the cell(s) in the main fuel table to tune.
3. Press M to open the Quick Trim form (or right click and select Quick Trim).
4. The Target and Measured Lambda/AFR values will already be filled out with the values from the cursor location in the current log, or if no log is open they will be filled out with the
current values. The CL Lambda Fuel Corr. value will be filled out if CLL is on and set to single bank otherwise it will be 0.0%.
5. Click OK (or press enter) to apply a correction to the fuel table.
6. Do this for all cells that require adjustment.

Notes for using Quick Trim:

· Quick Trim can be applied to a block of cells. However it will be applying the same amount of correction to all selected cells as is specified by the Target and measured Lambda so
only do this for groups of cells with similar Target and Measured Lambda values. If you are unsure it is recommended to only use Quick Trim on one cell at a time.
· The CL Lambda Fuel Corr. value can be set to any trim desired (between 50% and -50%), this means if you want to account for something like the Long Term Trim or some other
trim you can alter to suit.

PCLink G5 User Manual > Tuning Operating Procedures > Tables > Importing and Exporting Tables/Maps
Importing and Exporting Tables/Maps
Tables/Maps can be exported and imported (saved and loaded) separately from the rest of the .pclx or .pcl5 file (PCLink ECU configuration file). This allows tables/maps to be copied from
different ECUs without having to change all other configuration settings.

Exported tables/maps are saved as .pclx files for G4X or .pcl5 files for G5 and can be opened in PCLink for viewing, editing and saving as normal.

This is an extremely useful feature as it allows table/maps to be stored in archives. A good example is to export injector dead time tables after each tune and name them by injector part
number. This would allow the accumulation of a library of injector dead times that can be imported when required rather than manually entering each value.

Note: Not all tables can be exported or imported nicely, tables with fixed axis variables and fixed axis values won't necessarily export nicely due to their fixed format and so some extra
setup may be needed. In these cases the data from in the table can still be copied but the axes will need to be setup manually. This can be commonly encountered when trying to copy
G4+ tables into G4X or G5.

Exporting a Table to a File

Connect to a Link ECU or open a previously saved .pclx or .pcl5 file. Right click on any table/map and select Import/Export, then Export to File. You will be prompted to enter the file name.
It is recommended to enter a meaningful filename such as "My EVO - Fuel Map Only" to avoid confusion with the complete tune file

Table Axis Setup
Most tables can have their axis parameters and row/column centers adjusted. The Axis Setup menu is used to configure these tables.

Warning: Changes made in the Axis Setup menu will not be applied to the table until the Apply button is clicked. If the Close button is pressed without clicking Apply, changes will be
discarded.

The following adjustments can be made using the Axis Setup menu:
· X (horizontal) Axis Parameter - This is the parameter used to span the X axis
· Y (vertical) Axis Parameter - This is the parameter used to span the Y axis
· Add/Remove/Change Row/Column locations
· Initialize an axis with typical numbers

Fuel Table Axis Setup Window

If a 2D table is required, set the axis parameter to None. Setting X Axis to none will result in one column of cells. Setting the Y Axis to none will result in a one row of cells. Setting both X
Axis and Y Axis parameters to None will result in a table with a single cell.

The grid drawing area gives an indication of the relative spacing of the rows and columns in the table.

When OK is clicked a prompt will be displayed asking if the table should have its values interpolated. This feature makes sure that as rows and columns are removed, the correct values
are placed into the new rows and columns based on the shape of the table before the changes. Click Cancel to prevent the table values being changed if required.

Example - Setting up the X Axis

In most tables the X (horizontal) axis is typically set to RPM. In this example we will set up the main fuel tables X Axis for RPM, initialize the axis and add some extra columns.
1. Click on the main fuel table or press the F key to select the main fuel table.
2. Right click on the table and select Axis Setup or press the X key.
3. Set the X Axis Parameter to Engine Speed.
4. Press the 'Init Axis' button to fill out the axis table with typical values used for an engine speed axis.
5. Select the column labeled 1000. Press the Insert key.
6. Type directly into the value entry window. (e.g. change it to 800 RPM.)

PCLink G5 User Manual > Tuning Operating Procedures > Settings View

PCLink G5 User Manual > Logging Operating Procedures > Logging Views
Logging Views
The logging component of PCLink includes several log view types, these include:
· Navigator
· Time Plot
· XY Plot
· Histogram
· Logged Values List
· Parameter List
· Statistics List
· GPS Plot

As many of each view can be created at any one time. Each view shares a common time pointer, called the Cursor. Each view also has the ability (if enabled) to share a common time
range. Views are generally used in combination to provide the most information.

Time Pointer / Cursor

There is a time pointer (or cursor) representing a common time among all views. This allows you to analyse a specific time event in one view, while other views provide supporting
information of the same event.
Note: The Time Plot is the best view to control the time pointer as it provides a visual overview of the entire log. Click to drag the cursor from left to right, or use arrow keys. Move the
cursor in the time plot, watch the logged value list cursor move.

Common Time Range

There is a common time range between views. This allows you to zoom in on a section of the log in one view, and the other views automatically adjust to operate over this time range as
well. Most views have a property to enable/disable this common time range as in some conditions it is undesirable.

The other Runtime Views can be found here

Using the XY Plot as a Mixture Map

To use the XY Plot as a mixture map you first need to add parameters to the plot. A mixture map requires engine speed on the x-axis, manifold pressure on the y-axis and air to fuel ratio
on the colour scale.
1. Open the xy plot properties, do this by right clicking anywhere on the plot and selecting Properties. Make sure the selected tab is "Parameters".
2. Add engine speed to the x-axis. Click the icon on the right of the x parameter box or just start typing "engine speed" into the text box. A list will appear, select engine speed and
click Ok.
3. Underneath the x parameter box, you will see two options: Parameter Range and Manual Range. This controls the minimum and maximum values displayed on the x-axis. For this
example we will leave 'Parameter Range' selected. (If you want to set your own minimum and maximum values, select manual range and enter the values to the right.)

4. Next you will need to add the y-axis parameter, to do this click the Add Parameter button at the bottom of the dialog. A list will appear, select MGP (Manifold Gauge Pressure) and
click Ok.
5. MGP will now be visible in the list of y parameters as shown in the image below.

Hint: You can add more parameters to this list if you require. This is typically used for analysis of multiple channels of the same type of measurement.
6. The colour parameter now needs to be setup. Select the "Colour Parameter" tab.
7. Check the 'Use Colour Parameter' box to enable this function.
8. Click the icon on the right of the Parameter box. A list will appear, select the appropriate 'Lambda' channel.
9. You will now need to setup the colour range. Set the minimum, maximum and number of colour increments (divisions) that you want the plot to display. Typical numbers for air to
fuel ratio could be a minimum of 9, a maximum of 15 with 6 divisions. As you choose these numbers, the colour range will be generated using a green colour for the minimum and a
red colour for the maximum. The regions in between will be filled with a smooth blend through yellow.

Hint: See the section on Configuring Colour Ranges for more advanced control over the colour range.
10. Display properties of the XY Plot can also be configured, to do this first click the "Display" tab.
11. Set the caption to something appropriate. E.g. "Mixture Map".
12. Check the 'Common Time Range' check box for the XY Plot to only display samples over the time range controlled by a Navigator view.
13. The layout options apply when there are multiple Y parameters displayed. Overlapped means all of the parameters share a common surface, tiled means that each parameter gets
its own surface. When in tiled mode, columns can either be automatically calculated or manually set.
14. The display settings hide, show and control visual aspects of the plot. For the mixture map you will want to uncheck show lines, and check show points. Choose a point style.
15. Click OK to complete the setup.

· Setting up a Histogram as a Mixture Map

The histogram provides a visual indication of the amount of time spent in at specific value within a parameter. A colour dimension can be added to the histogram to display a second
dimension of information.
The following screen shot shows a typical application as a mixture graph:

Histogram as a mixture graph

This graph has MAP (manifold pressure) on the x-axis, the overall height of each bar represents the proportion of time MAP was within the width of the bar. Each bar is coloured
representing the air to fuel ratio (wideband), the proportion of each colour inside the bar represents the amount of time the air fuel ratio was inside the specified range while MAP was
within the width of the bar.
You can see from the above graph that at high MAP levels, the proportion of green/pink/blue colours is much larger than at low manifold pressure. At low MAP there is a much higher
presence of red colours representing an air to fuel ratio of greater than 14. This provides a quick method of determining the most common air to fuel ratio at any given MAP. If you were
seeing red colours at high MAP levels then it would indicate a potential problem.

PCLink G5 User Manual > Logging Operating Procedures > PC Logging

PC Logging
There are two types of data logging, PC Logging and ECU Logging. The key difference is which device captures the data log. PC Logging allows you to capture log files directly onto your
PC. Log files can be captured manually or automatically based on user configurable conditions.

Setting up PC Logging
The following setup window can be accessed by selecting 'Setup PC Logging' in the 'Logging' drop down menu.

Logging Setup Window

Open Log File Options

The following actions can be performed when opening a log file:
· Zoom All - Display the entire file.
· Zoom Shortest Section - Display the shortest section (fastest lap or drag run).

Online Sample History

The Online Sample History is a background buffer of previous parameter values (samples) that fills while connected to an ECU. A number of previous samples for each parameter is
stored. It is these values that are used to display the snake trail on tables. As there is always a running history these samples can automatically be added to the start of a log file when
recording if required. This is useful for if something unusual happens but logging was not recording. The F8 key can quickly be pressed and the history will be added to the recorded log
possibly showing the unusual event in the log. The following options are available for setting up the sample history:

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 79 of 98

· Samples - The number of previous values recorded.

· Add to Start of PC Log - Select if it is desired that the history buffer be added to the start of new recorded files.

The length of the history buffer is not dependant on the selected logging rate. The history is logged at the maximum rate the PC to ECU connection is capable of.

Note: The length of the sample history buffer also affects the length of the table snake trail.

Selecting the Parameters to Log

Parameters can be added to the 'Logged Parameters' list on the right. To do this either double click on the required parameters or click the '>>' button to transfer them into the list.
Parameters can be removed by highlighting them and clicking 'Remove Item(s)'.

Note: Click "Add All" to log everything.

Display Time Range

The display time range can be set to either auto or manual.
· When auto is selected, the time plot views will keep adjusting their zoom to show the entire log file as it is being recorded.
· When auto is unchecked, the number of seconds specified in the box below will be the amount of time displayed on the time plot view as the log is being recorded.

Selecting the Logging Rate

The rate defines how many samples per second of each parameter the PC will try and sample. If the selected rate is higher than the current data rate, the sample rate will be reduced to
the data rate.

Save unchanged points

With this checkbox active PCLink will record all data points, even if the data does not change, this can lead to a much larger log file. With the checkbox in-active PCLink will only record a
new data point when a parameter has changed, this leads to much small log files and is recommended.

Configuring Logging Control

There are two main types of logging control, manual and automatic. Manual control gives the user full control over when the PC Logging is active. In auto mode the system can be setup so
the logging becomes active when a condition is met. The conditions can be either RPM, MAP or TP is greater than X value. X is the value in the 'Automatic Logging Start Condition'.

Operating PC Logging
Once PC Logging has been configured, there are three possible states:
· PC Log = Off - PC Logging is inactive.
· PC Log = Record - Log file is being recorded
· PC Log = Play - Log file is playing back
The current state is displayed at the bottom left of the screen.

Manual Operation
In manual operation logging is controlled by the F8 Key or using the Start/Stop options in the Logging drop down menu.

Automatic Operation
Recording can be controlled automatically. In automatic operation the logging recording state is controlled by the start condition specified in the setup. Setup the conditions upon which to
start/stop logging in the PC Logging Setup menu.

PCLink G5 User Manual > Logging Operating Procedures > ECU Logging
ECU Logging
When operating, ECU Logging stores real time information in the ECUs on board memory, this information can be retrieved at a later date for analysis. What is sampled, and the rate at
which the data is sampled can be configured as well as when ECU Logging is activated.

It is important to note that this is NOT the same as the PCLink PC logging feature that stores information directly to a connected PC.
Note: ECU Logging is Paused while the Trigger Scope form is open and while the Log File Download window is open.

Setting up ECU Logging

To setup ECU logging go to PCLink > Logging > Setup Logging. Make sure you are on the ECU Logging tab.

file:///C:/Users/Doug/AppData/Local/Temp/~hh75D6.htm 8/27/2024
PCLink G5 User Manual Page 80 of 98

ECU Logging Setup

The following settings are available for configuring ECU Logging:

· Enabled checkbox - Turns ECU Logging off or on.
· Default Frequency - The rate at which ECU Logging parameters are sampled by default. Note Hz = Samples per second.
· Control Conditions - The conditions used to activate ECU Logging. The IO ON, RPM Above, TPS Above and MAP Above conditions ALL need to be met for ECU logging to
commence.
o IO ON - An Input or Output used to switch on ECU logging.
o Off Condition - An Input or Output used to switch off ECU Logging. Note if left off the logging will switch off when any of the other conditions aren't met.
o RPM Above - The RPM at which ECU logging will commence.
o TPS Above - The TPS (Main) percentage at which ECU logging will commence.
o MAP Above - The MAP reading at which ECU logging will commence.
o Off Delay - The amount of time ECU logging will continue for after one of the conditions is no longer met. Note if Off Condition is being used then the Off Condition input must be
active for the Off Delay time before logging is stopped.
· Available Parameters - The list of possible parameters to be logged. Select the desired parameter from the list and then click the arrow button to the right of the list.
· Logged Parameters - The list of parameters that will be logged and the frequency at which they will be logged.
· Load - Used to load ECU Logging setups from a file. Note loading a log set file (.llsx) will not remove any items from the logging list so multiple files can be loaded on top of each
other.
· Save - Saves the current list of variables to be logged and the rate at which they are logged at to a .llsx file.

Note: More complicated control conditions can be implemented using a virtual Aux triggered by a GP Output in addition to the standard conditions.

Maximum Logging Parameters

The ECU has a maximum total logging rate of 100,000 Samples per Second. A maximum of 250 parameters can be selected for ECU logging. Each parameter can be logged at up to
1kHz. This means it is possible to exceed the maximum total logging rate. PCLink will warn you if you try to exceed the maximum total logging rate. If the maximum total logging rate is
exceeded and more parameters need to be logged it will be necessary to reduce the sample rate of some parameters.

ECU Memory Capacity

· Logging more parameters will fill the logging memory more quickly.
· Logging at a higher frequency will fill the logging memory more quickly.
· ECU Logging uses a compaction algorithm which maximises storage.
· When the logging memory is full the logging will continue overwriting the oldest data.

Downloading an ECU Log

Log files can be downloaded from the ECU with the ECU Log File Manager. The log file manager can be accessed by selecting ECU Controls > ECU Log File Download from the drop
down menu.
The ECU Log File Manager shows the following information:
· Log File Number - This number increments with each log or each filled file.
· Log Size - The size of the Log file in ECU Memory, the actual file saved to your computer will be larger due to the information being compressed on the ECU.
· Log Duration - The total duration the log file was recorded over.
· Engine Starts - the number of times the engine has been started at the time of this log (since statistics were last reset).
· Start Time - The length of time the ECU has been on (since last power up).
· Number of Parameters - The number of parameters in the particular log file.
· Rate - The rate a which the data was stored, note that this value is 4Bytes per sample or 32bits.

PCLink G5 User Manual > Compare Base Map
Compare Base Map
Compare is a powerful function that allows users to see how two base maps differ. This could be used to see if a base map has been altered, alternatively a base map could be saved at
the start of a tune, comparing at the end would display what was changed.

To use:
1. Connect to an ECU, or open a base map.
2. Select, File > Compare and open another base map to compare the existing base map to.
3. The user interface is altered to display information from both base maps.
4. Select, File > Compare Close when finished.

· Tables are altered to show the current base map table on top of the compared base map table.
· The ECU Settings Menu tree view is changed to display where other changes in the base map exist.
· The Settings View is changed to show what values have been changed.

Fuel Table Compare

Table cells are enlarged to show the current base map table values above the values to which it is being compared, the differences are highlighted. Shown here, Fuel Table 1 has had the
3500 column multiplied by 1.1, the cells from 4000 RPM, 100 kPa to 7000 RPM to 150 kPa were multipled by 1.2, an additional column was added in at 5700 RPM too.

Settings Compare
The ECU Settings Menu changes the font colour to highlight where the differences occur the tree structure can be followed down to the individual differences. A column has been added to
the Settings View to show the compared base map values and difference are highlighted.

Version 6.15.15 - 04-12-19

This is the first release version

PCLink G5 User Manual > Save as Encrypted

Save as Encrypted
Enter topic text here. The Save as Encrypted function allows for a base map to be only used in a selected ECU, it also encrypts the base map for increased security. Once the base map is
saved using Save as Encrypted it can only be used in the specified ECU.

One use of the 'Save as Encrypted' function is for a tuner to make sure the tune they develop is used only on the ECU they have tuned. Another use is that it allows for a tuner to have a
method of selling/distributing their base map to multiple ECUs while still maintaining control.

Saving an encrypted base map

Before a base map can be saved as encrypted the ECU must have password protection enabled. If password protection is not activated, the file will still be locked to the selected ECU but
all settings will still be visible allowing the end installer to see, modify and redistribute them.

1. Select 'Save as Encrypted' from the File dropdown menu.

2. Choose the location and file name. Nb - Including the serial number in the base map file name is a good way to remember which ECU the base map is for.
3. Click the Save button.
4. Enter the serial number of the ECU the base map is intended for.

5. Click OK to save the base map in the location specified in step two.

The saved base map is only able to be loaded into the ECU with the serial number specified. When loaded into the correct ECU the settings and statistics are not visible or able to be
edited unless password protection is disabled. If an attempt is made to load the base map into an ECU with the wrong serial number an error message "The file is locked to a different ECU
serial number" is presented to the user.

Note: An ECUs serial number can be found on the ECU or by looking under Help > ECU Information in PCLink.
PCLink G5 User Manual > PCLink File Types
