The movie Interstellar directed by Christopher Nolan is one of the best films ever
made. Interstellar has won one Oscar and is the 18th highest rated movie on IMDb. In the
movie several accurate and realistic physics ideas appear which are perfectly mixed with
dramatic storytelling. The most evident ideas are black holes and gravitational time dilation.
Most of the climax takes place around a giant black hole called the Gargantua. This
black hole provides a lot of iconic visuals in the film and also has a huge part in the story.
The crew are exploring planets around this black hole to find a new planet that they can
inhabit. A black hole is a region of spacetime where gravity is so strong that not even light
can escape it. The depiction of Gargantua is pretty accurate, it even looks like the real image
of a black hole captured by NASA Sagittarius A. The light bending around the black hole is
also very accurate and is backed up by science. Even though the Gargantuan was pretty
realistic the fact that planets near it exist is not so much as any planet experiencing the time
dilation mentioned in the movie would be disintegrated by the forces.
One of the moments that had viewers at the edge of their seats was when they were
on the water planet that had time dilation, where every hour spent on the planet equaled
seven years back on earth. When Cooper and Brand were on the planet the soundtrack
playing had a tick sound like a metronome every 1.25 seconds where every tick heard
represented a day that passed on earth. This comes from Einstein’s theory of relativity
where time passes slower in a stronger gravitational fields which is provided by the
Gargantuan in this case. While not impossible, the planet needs to orbit extremely close to
the event horizon of the black hole which would make it almost impossible for the planet or
the people on the planet to survive.
In conclusion Interstellar shows the use of physics as a tool for very impressive and
powerful storytelling. Using concepts that the viewer is mostly unfamiliar with makes it a both
highly entertaining and educational piece of media. The movie shows how realistic
depictions of complex theories being exaggerated can spark curiosity and wonder and make
the viewer think
