Executive Summary
Topic Area of the Report
This report focuses on my Civic and Social Service Internship (CSSI) conducted under
the guidance of Dr. Mayur Joshi, Managing Trustee of Udgam Charitable Trust,
Gandhinagar. The internship was centered around supporting underprivileged children
studying in a government school. It highlights the educational challenges these children
face due to poverty, limited infrastructure, and lack of access to resources. The report
explores various socio-economic and cultural barriers that impact the academic
performance and personal growth of students in marginalized communities.
Aim of the Report
The primary aim of this internship was to understand the day-to-day realities of children
from economically weaker sections and to provide support in their educational journey.
The goal was to create a positive impact on their academic performance, social skills, and
emotional well-being through classroom assistance, personal interaction, and activity-
based learning. The report also aims to present practical recommendations that can help
improve the current system supporting such students.
Summary of the Approach
The internship approach involved working closely with school staff, observing classroom
behavior, mentoring students, and organizing both academic and creative activities. Each
day was spent engaging directly with the children by helping them with reading, writing,
and basic mathematics. Games, storytelling sessions, and art activities were included to
build rapport and boost confidence among the students. Discussions with teachers and
community members helped gain a broader perspective on systemic issues and local
constraints.
Key Achievements and Findings
The internship resulted in improved engagement among students and helped identify
individual learning challenges. One of the major achievements was motivating shy and
less confident children to participate actively in classroom discussions and group tasks. It
was also observed that students responded positively to personalized attention and
interactive learning methods. A key finding was that despite infrastructural limitations,
the children possessed immense potential and were eager to learn when guided with
empathy and patience. Additionally, the involvement of local community members and
educators revealed that with consistent support, meaningful transformation is achievable.
Recommendations and Conclusion
The report recommends greater collaboration between NGOs, schools, and government
bodies to implement enrichment programs and provide emotional and academic support
to underprivileged students. Strengthening teacher training, improving classroom
infrastructure, and creating after-school support systems are essential. It is also
recommended to introduce regular health check-ups and nutritional support as part of
school programs to ensure the holistic well-being of children. Workshops to sensitize
parents on the value of education and child development can play a critical role in
increasing attendance and performance. This internship has provided me with invaluable
exposure to real-world challenges in education and has inspired me to continue
contributing to social causes. The experience has reinforced the importance of
compassion, patience, and consistent efforts in driving meaningful social change.
