Class Notes: Cells
Introduction to Cells
Cells are the basic structural and functional units of life. Every living organism is made up of one or
more cells.
Types of Cells
There are two main types of cells: Prokaryotic (without a nucleus, e.g., bacteria) and Eukaryotic
(with a nucleus, e.g., plant and animal cells).
Cell Structure
Key parts include: Cell membrane (controls entry/exit), Cytoplasm (gel-like substance inside),
Nucleus (control center), and Organelles like mitochondria, chloroplasts, ribosomes.
Plant vs Animal Cells
Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts, and a large central vacuole. Animal cells lack a cell wall
but have centrioles and smaller vacuoles.
Functions of Cells
Cells provide structure, produce energy, carry genetic material, and perform specialized tasks in
multicellular organisms.
Cell Theory
1) All living things are made of cells. 2) The cell is the basic unit of life. 3) All cells come from
pre-existing cells.
Conclusion
Understanding cells helps explain how life functions, grows, and reproduces.
