i. This examination consists of three sections A, B and C with total of eleven (11)
questions.
ii. Answer all questions in section A, B and only two questions in section C.
iii. All writings must be in blue or black ink and drawings should be done by pencil.
iv. Cellular phones and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the examination
room
v. Non-programmable calculators and mathematical tables are allowed in the
examination room.
vi. Where necessary the following constants may be used.
a. Acceleration due to gravity, g=10m/s2
b. Density of water=1g/cm3 or 1000Kg/m3
c. Specific heat capacity of water= 4200J/Kg
d. Specific heat capacity of ice= 2100J/Kg
e. Specific latent heat of fusion=3.35 105J/Kg
f. Speed of sound in air=340m/s

3. (a) With the supporting ray diagram briefly describe why concave mirrors are preferred
by dentists at hospital. (4 marks)
(b) A ray of light is shone through a rectangular glass block at an angle of 60 0 to the air-
glass interface as shown in the figure 5.

If the refractive index of air is 1.0 and refractive index of glass block is 1.5, calculate
the distance AB, a ray travels through the glass before emerging into the air. (5 marks)
4. (a) Submarines are made of steel and other dense materials with a lot of empty space
filled with air. It is a unique ship because it can submerge and resurface. Explain briefly
how a submarine can be made to;
i. Submerge (sink) in the ocean (2 marks)
ii. Resurface (float) on the ocean (2 marks)
(b) Study figure 6 and then answer the question that follows.

5. (a) For most front-wheel-drive cars, the engine is placed over the driven wheels. Briefly
explain why? (4 marks)
(b) A block of mass m slides down a plane inclined at an angle of 60 0 to the horizontal
with an acceleration equal to half of the acceleration due to gravity. Show that the
coefficient of kinetic friction, µ =√ - 1. (5marks).
6. (a) Giving two reasons explain briefly why Aluminium is a suitable metal in making
motor engines, pistons and cylinders. (4marks)
(b) How much heat is required to change 40g ice cube from ice at -100c to water at
150c.(5marks)
7. (a) Explain how diffraction is used in long distance radio signal propagation. (4marks)
(b) Archaeologists are analyzing ancient bones from a human settlement. They discover
that a sample of bone has 6.25% of carbon-14 of modern human bones. Determine the
age of the settlement given that the half-life of carbon-14 is 5700 years.
8. (a) Briefly explain with illustration, how ocean tides occur? (5marks)
(b) Explain two positive effects of volcanic eruption. (4marks).
SECTION C (30 Marks)
Answer two (2) questions in this section.
9. (a) Two capacitors of capacitances C1 and C2 are connected in series.
i. Show that their equivalent capacitance C is given as;

(c) A house has five rooms, each with a 60W, 240v bulb. If the bulbs are switched ON
from 7.00p.m to 10.30 p.m, determine;
i. Energy in KWh consumed. (2.5 marks)

10. (a) Draw a well labeled diagram of X-Ray tube. (7 marks)
(b) It is mostly safe to use Gamma rays in industry during food storage than to use Beta
radiations. Account for their differences. (3marks)
(c) Describe how forward biasing of a p-n junction occur. (5marks)
11. (a) String A is 2m long and has a linear mass density of 9gcm -1. String B has a linear
mass density of 18gcm-1. If the tension in both strings is the same, how long must string
B be for it to be at resonance with string A? (4marks).
