Math Module: Understanding Multiplication and Division
Introduction
Welcome to our math module on multiplication and division! These are important skills that
will help you in many areas of math. Let’s learn how to solve multiplication and division problems
step by step!
Part 1: Multiplication
What is Multiplication?
Multiplication is a way to add the same number over and over. It helps us find the total when we
have groups of the same size.
How to Solve Multiplication Problems:
1. Identify the Numbers: Look at the two numbers you’re multiplying.
2. Think of Groups: Determine how many groups you have.
3. Count Items in Each Group: Figure out how many items are in each group.
4. Multiply: Use the multiplication sign (×) and solve.
Example Problems:
1. Problem 1: 3 × 4
Solution: 3 groups of 4 = 12
2. Problem 2: 5 × 2
Solution: 5 groups of 2 = 10
3. Problem 3: 7 × 6
Solution: 7 groups of 6 = 42
4. Problem 4: 8 × 3
Solution: 8 groups of 3 = 24
5. Problem 5: 4 × 5
Solution: 4 groups of 5 = 20
Part 2: Division
What is Division?
Division is about splitting a number into equal parts. It helps us find out how many items are
in each group when we share.
How to Solve Division Problems:
1. Identify the Numbers: Find the number you’re dividing (the total) and the number you’re dividing
by (the groups).
2. Think About Equal Parts: Decide how many equal parts you want.
3. Divide: Use the division sign (÷) and solve.
Example Problems:
1. Problem 1: 12 ÷ 3
Solution: 12 items shared among 3 groups = 4
2. Problem 2: 20 ÷ 4
Solution: 20 items shared among 4 groups = 5
3. Problem 3: 18 ÷ 6
Solution: 18 items shared among 6 groups = 3
4. Problem 4: 30 ÷ 5
Solution: 30 items shared among 5 groups = 6
5. Problem 5: 40 ÷ 8
Solution: 40 items shared among 8 groups = 5
