Assignment (1 September)

Chapter 9 covers various problems related to light, reflection, and refraction, including calculations for magnification, image distance, and focal lengths for both convex and concave lenses and mirrors. It also discusses the refractive indices of different media and their implications on the speed of light. The chapter includes practical applications and ray diagrams to illustrate image formation.

Chapter 9 (Light: Reflection and Refraction)

1. The magnification produced when an object is placed at a distance of 20

cm from a spherical mirror is +1/2. Where should the object be placed to
reduce the magnification to +1/3?
2. Size of image of an object formed by a mirror having a focal length of 20
cm, is observed to be reduced to 1/3 rd of its size. At what distance the
object has been placed from the mirror? What is the nature of the image
and the mirror?
3. The refractive index of a medium ‘x’ with respect to a medium ‘y’ is 2/3
and the refractive index of medium ‘y’ with respect to medium ‘z’ is 4/3.
Find the refractive index of medium ‘z’ with respect to medium ‘x’. If the
speed of light in medium ‘x’ is 3 X 108 m/s, calculate the speed of light in
medium ‘y’.
4. A student focused the image of a candle flame on a white screen using a
convex lens. He noted down the position of the candle, screen and the
lens as under
Position of candle = 12.0 cm
Position of Convex Lens = 50.0 cm
Position of the screen = 88.0 cm
(i) What is the focal length of the convex lens?
(ii) Where will the image be formed if he shifts the candle towards the
lens at a position of 31.0 cm?
(iii) What will be the nature of the image formed if he further shifts the
candle towards the lens?
(iv) Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of the image in case (iii)
as said above.
5. The focal length of a concave lens is 20 cm. At what distance from the lens
should a 5 cm tall object be placed so that its image is formed at a distance
of 15 cm from the lens? Also, calculate the size of the image formed.
6. (i) An object of 5 cm height is placed at a distance of 20 cm from the
optical centre of a concave lens of focal length 18 cm. Calculate (a) image
distance and (b) the magnification in this case.
(ii) Compare the values of magnification obtained by a concave lens and a
convex lens when both the lenses form virtual images.
7. A concave lens has a power of – 2.0 D. It forms an image of an object at a
distance of 10 cm from the lens.
(i) Find the distance of the object from the lens.
(ii) Find the magnification produced.
8. A student uses a lens of focal length 50 cm and another of – 50 cm. What
is the nature of the lens and its power used by each of them?
9. An object is placed at a distance of 10 cm from a convex mirror of focal
length 15 cm. Find the position of the image formed by the mirror.
10. (i) The image of an object formed by a lens is of same size but
inverted. If the object distance is 30 cm, calculate
(a) The distance between the object and its image
(b) Focal length of the lens
11. An object 4.0 cm in size, is placed at a distance of 25.0 cm in front of
a concave mirror of focal length 15.0 cm.
(i) At what distance from the mirror should a screen be placed in order
to obtain a sharp image?
(ii) Find the size of the image.
(iii) Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of image in this case.
12. The absolute refractive indices of two media A and B are 2.0 and 1.5
respectively. If the speed of light in medium B is 2 X 108 m/s, calculate the
speed of light in
(i) Vacuum (ii) medium A
13. A concave mirror has a focal length of 20 cm. At what distance from
the mirror should a 4 cm tall object be placed so that it forms an image at
a distance of 30 cm from the mirror? Also calculate the size of the image
formed.
14. A 6 cm tall object is placed perpendicular to the principal axis of a
concave mirror of focal length 30 cm. The distance of the object from the
mirror is 45 cm. Use mirror formula to determine the position, nature and
size of the image formed. Also draw labelled ray diagram to show the
formation in this case.
15. The image of a candle flame formed by a lens is obtained on a screen
placed on the other side of the lens. If the image is three times the size of
the flame and the distance between lens and image is 80 cm, at what
distance should the candle be placed from the lens? What is the nature of
the image at a distance of 80 cm from the lens?
16. An object of height 5.0 cm is placed at 15 cm in front of a concave
mirror of focal length 10 cm. At what distance from the mirror should a
screen be placed, so that a focussed image is obtained on it? Find the
height of the image.
