School of Business Research Ethics Approval Form
The School of Business is concerned to protect the dignity, rights, safety and well-being of all
participants in any research study that involves people. The avoidance of harm to research subjects
should therefore be a prime consideration for all School researchers and students. This ethics
approval form must be completed by all UG and PG students who are undertaking a research
project and be signed by both the student and the supervisor.
If the research is not NHS-based, please complete the questions below and hand in the form to your
supervisor Professor John-Paul Okeke. Once your supervisor has approved and signed off the form,
they will retain it for the duration of the project. It is wise to complete the form in a timely fashion as
your supervisor might ask you to make amendments prior to approving it.

2. Provide a brief outline of the aim and objectives of the proposed research project
The objective of the study is to establish the effect of foreign migration on the
labor productivity and the management of the workforce between skilled and
unskilled labor in the construction industry of Nepal.
To determine the impact of migration on labor productivity of skilled and unskilled
workers.
To determine the problems arising to construction companies in Nepal as a result
of the loss of skilled workers.
To research the effect of foreign migration in the construction industry on
management practices and job opportunities..
3. Outline the proposed research design and any details of the type of data to be collected
from human participants (e.g., questionnaire, interview, observation etc.). Please
include information on which group of people you will be contacting, how you will
gather information (ensuring this is via UCLan supported platforms for online research
i.e. Microsoft Forms, Microsoft Teams), and the approximate numbers of people
involved.
The proposed study will involve quantitative research design that is going to be conducted using a
structured questionnaire in order to collect numerical and statistical data involving human
participants in the study. The construction industry in Nepal and its effect on political and
economic stability will be the focal point of the questionnaire by concentrating on issues such as
labour productivity, workforce management, and the effect of international migration.
Participants:
The study will focus on two major groups:
• qualified construction personnel (engineers, supervisors, managers, site managers,
construction vehicle drivers)
Unskilled laborers (workers, assistants) in construction.
The selection of these participants will be performed among the diverse Nepali construction sites,
which will ensure that there is a diversity of age, roles, and level of experience.
Data Collection Method:
• The questionnaire will be given out via Microsoft Forms;
• Participants who have no access to internet can also work with paper copies and then
input them digitally.
4. Does the proposed research contain any potential contentious issues that might affect
the physical, psychological or emotional wellbeing of the research participants.
The study shall utilize a quantitative design and shall primarily make use of questionnaires.
Although the questions are general and do not require the person to get too close or personal, the
attempt will be taken to prevent the possibility of emotional distress- particularly when
confronting people on matters like immigration, employment status or working conditions.
In order to address any such risks, a pilot study should be done to refine the questions in
accordance with the ethics at UCLan and make sure they are sensitive. They will be made well
aware of their rights including the right to avoid any questions that they feel uncomfortable with.
The involvement will be voluntary and the responses would be confidential and anonymous.
5. Detail how you will gain the informed consent from the individuals and/or organisations
participating in the research. If possible, attach a copy of your draft consent form.
Before completing the questionnaire, every participant will receive an information page and
consent form. Data collected will remain confidential, anonymized and will be used in an
academic manner.
6. Which of the following methods of assuring confidentiality of data will be
implemented?

For the attention of UG and PG Research Supervisors
If you are satisfied that this ethics application can be approved – then sign in the box below and
retain the form for the duration of the research. If there are any ethical issues with which you are
uncomfortable, and in your opinion require additional scrutiny then forward this to Douglas
Martin at
[email protected] For answers marked with * in section 1, would be required to be reviewed by one of the Central
Ethics Review Panels, UG and PG students should only be undertaking such research in
exceptional circumstances. Prior to being sent centrally the supervisor would need to be satisfied
that the project merits further research, study has the skills (and support) to carry out the
research, and participant facing documentation is appropriate.
