MAIN EXAM
APPLIED SCIENCE

MODULE I

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES.

 This paper has TWO section.

 Answer ANY TWO questions in section B
 Indicate your FULL ADMISSION NUMBER on the answer sheet.
 Any examination IRREGULARITY will lead to DISQUALIFICATION

Time:2 hours
SECTION A 50 MARKS
1. a) Define the following thermal properties:
i) Heat
ii) Temperature
iii) Thermal conductivity
iv) Latent heat of fusion (4 marks)
b) Explain the mode of heat transfer in solids, liquids, and gases. (6 marks)
c) A 2 kg block of metal at 100°C is placed in 1 kg of water at 20°C. Find the final
temperature if no heat is lost to the surroundings.
(Specific heat capacity of water = 4200 J/kg°C, of metal = 400 J/kg°C) (7 marks)
d) Distinguish between specific latent heat of fusion and specific latent heat of
vaporization. (7 marks)
e) State three effects of heat on solids. (3 marks)
2. a) Explain the structure of an atom using a well-labeled diagram. (6 marks)
b) Distinguish between the following:
i) Element and compound
ii) Molecule and ion
iii) Acid and base (6 marks)

c) Describe how you would test for:

i) Hydrogen gas
ii) Oxygen gas
iii) Carbon dioxide gas (6 marks)

d) State three safety precautions when handling chemicals in the laboratory. (3 marks)
e) List two differences between physical and chemical changes. (2 marks)

SECTION B 50 MARKS

3. A mass of 0.20kg of water at 0°Cis placed in a vessel of negligible heat capacity. An

electric heater with an output of 24 W is placed in the water and switched on. When the
temperature of the water reaches 12°C, the heater is switched off.
a) Calculate the time for which the heater is switched on. Assume that the heat capacity
of water is 4200J/kgK (10 marks)
b) An ice cube of mass0.020kg is added to the0.20kg of water at 0°Cin the same vessel
and the heater is switched on. Assuming that all the ice is at 0°C, calculate how long it
will take for the water to reach 12°C. Assume that the specific latent heat of fusion on ice
is 0.34 MJ/kg (15marks)
4. a) Thermal energy is supplied to a melting solid at a constant rate of 2000W. Calculate
the mass of the solid changed to liquid in 2.0 minutes. Assume that the specific latent
heat of fusion of the solid is 95 000 J/kg and that heat exchange with the surroundings
may be neglected (10 marks)
b) 2.0 kg of ice is placed in a vacuum flask, both iceand flask being at 0°C. It is found
that exactly 14 hours elapse before the contents of the flask are entirely water at °C.
Given that the specific latent heat of fusion of ice is 3.4 x 105 J/kg, calculate the average
rate at which the contents gain heat from the surroundings (15marks)

5. (i) A force of 30 N is used to move a box 5 meters on a horizontal floor.

a) Calculate the work done.
b) If the task is completed in 10 seconds, find the power used. (4 marks)
c) State three differences between evaporation and boiling. (3 marks)
(ii) List any three factors that affect the rate of a chemical reaction. (3
marks)
(iii) A pulley system is used to lift a 200 N load with an effort of 80 N.
a) Calculate the mechanical advantage.
b) Calculate the efficiency if the velocity ratio is 3. (4 marks)
(iv) Write the chemical symbols for the following elements:
a) Sodium
b) Iron
c) Lead
d) Calcium
e) Zinc (5 marks)
(v) State three effects of heat on matter. (3 marks)
(vi)Differentiate between potential energy and kinetic energy. (3 marks)
