Motivation
Look at the children in the picture below. With a
partner, list the children according to their position in
the line, starting from the left.

ORDINAL NUMBERS

An ordinal number shows


the position of an object in
an arrangement.
How do we write ordinal numbers?
To write ordinal numbers:

• Add “st” to 1, and other numbers ending in 1


after 20.
Examples: 1st, 21st, 31st, 41st

• Add “nd” to 2, and other numbers ending in 2


after 20.
Examples: 2nd, 22nd, 32nd, 42nd
Ordinal numbers tell position.
To write ordinal numbers:
• Add “rd” to 3, and other numbers ending in 3
after 20.
Examples: 3rd, 23rd, 33rd, 43rd
• Add “th” after the ordinal numbers not
mentioned above.
Examples: 4th, 11th, 20th, 26th
HERE ARE THE FIRST 20 ORDINAL NUMBERS.
• In what way are the ordinal numbers
from 4th to 20th the same?
• What do you observe about the
ordinal numbers 12th and 20th when
written in words?
Ordinal numbers from 4th to 20th all end with
-th.
When written in words, they both change
some letters.
Example: twelfth instead of twelveth
twentieth instead of twentyeth.
In an art contest, Melissa is the
24th contestant.
This ordinal number is read as
twenty-fourth.
Lorenz is the 26th contestant. This
ordinal number is read as twenty-sixth.
Charmaine is the twenty-ninth
contestant.
Complete the word form of each ordinal
number.
