Chapter 3: Lines and Angles T1 W3

Notes and Examples

Name: ______________________________________ Date:______________

3.4 Polygons
KEY LEARNING STATEMENTS

 A polygon is a two-dimensional shape with three or more sides. Polygons are

named according the number of sides they have:
 triangle (3)
 quadrilateral (4)
 pentagon (5)
 hexagon (6)
 heptagon (7)
 octagon (8)
 nonagon (9)
 decagon (10).
 A regular polygon has all its sides equal and all its angles equal.
 The interior angle sum of any polygon can be worked out using the formula

(n−2)×180 where n is the number of sides. Once you have the angle sum, you
can find the size of one angle of a regular polygon by dividing the total by the
number of angles.
 The sum of the exterior angles of any convex polygon is 360∘.

1 For each of the following find:

i the sum of the interior angles
ii the size of one interior angle.
a a regular octagon
b a regular decagon
c a regular 15 -sided polygon.

Notes and Examples
2 A coin is made in the shape of a regular heptagon. Calculate the size of each
interior angle.

3 The interior angle of a regular polygon is 162∘. How many sides does the polygon
have?

4 One exterior angle of a regular polygon is 14.4 ∘.

a What is the size of each interior angle?
b How many sides does the polygon have?

5 Calculate the value of the angles marked with letters in each of these irregular
polygons.
