3.4 Polygons
KEY LEARNING STATEMENTS
A polygon is a two-dimensional shape with three or more sides. Polygons are
named according the number of sides they have:
triangle (3)
quadrilateral (4)
pentagon (5)
hexagon (6)
heptagon (7)
octagon (8)
nonagon (9)
decagon (10).
A regular polygon has all its sides equal and all its angles equal.
The interior angle sum of any polygon can be worked out using the formula
∘
(n−2)×180 where n is the number of sides. Once you have the angle sum, you
can find the size of one angle of a regular polygon by dividing the total by the
number of angles.
The sum of the exterior angles of any convex polygon is 360∘.
1 For each of the following find:
i the sum of the interior angles
ii the size of one interior angle.
a a regular octagon
b a regular decagon
c a regular 15 -sided polygon.
