6. Introduction:
Smart warehousing requires automation for faster and safer operations.
Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) are widely used in industries, but most
industrial models are expensive and complex. For student-level innovation, a
simplified and cost-effective prototype can still demonstrate the core functions
of smart navigation and safety.
This project aims to develop a low-cost AMR prototype that can perform part
delivery tasks in a warehouse-like environment while integrating a brake-
triggered ignition safety system. The robot will use an ESP32 microcontroller for
control, ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection, DC motors with a motor
driver for movement, and a stepper motor for steering. Safety is ensured by a
12V relay circuit with kill switches, which activates the vehicle only when the
brake is pressed, preventing unintended movement.
The proposed system provides a cost-effective, student-friendly solution that
demonstrates both automation and safety features. Although scaled down, the
prototype reflects real-world applications of AMRs in warehouses and
introduces an innovative safety mechanism that can be extended to electric
vehicles.

7. Objective:
1. To design and develop a low-cost Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR)
prototype for simulating part delivery tasks in a smart warehouse
environment.
2. To integrate essential sensors and actuators such as ultrasonic
sensors, DC motors, motor drivers, and a stepper motor for navigation,
obstacle detection, and steering control.
3. To implement a brake-triggered ignition system using a 12V relay and
kill switch to prevent unintended movement and enhance safety.
4. To program simple navigation algorithms (grid-based or path-following)
on an ESP32 microcontroller for autonomous movement and obstacle
avoidance.
5. To demonstrate cost-effectiveness by using easily available and
affordable electronic components within the allotted budget of ₹15,000.
6. To provide a scalable foundation that can be extended in future for
advanced applications like IoT-based monitoring and multi-vehicle
coordination.

8. Methodology:
The methodology our team followed to integrate the smart safety device with
Automated Mobile Robots (AMRs) in the warehouse was systematic and iterative.
The primary goal was to ensure real-time monitoring of critical safety events and
prompt action through SMS notifications when necessary.

TNSCST-SPS 2025 Page 3

1. System Design and Planning
 Identification of Critical Events: Our team began by identifying the
safety events that needed to be monitored. These included high-priority
events like fire detection, collisions, equipment malfunctions, and
unauthorized access. We focused on events that could lead to significant
disruptions or risks to personnel.
 Selection of Sensors: Based on the types of events, we selected sensors
that would reliably detect these situations in the dynamic warehouse
environment. Our team ensured that the chosen sensors were effective in
various conditions.
 Defining Communication Protocols: We decided on an appropriate radio
frequency (RF) communication protocol that would allow the safety devices
and AMRs to communicate reliably over the warehouse floor without
interference.
2. Hardware Setup and Integration
 Integration of Safety Devices: Our group worked on integrating the
smart safety devices with RF transmitters to ensure that the devices would
automatically trigger when a critical event was detected. We configured the
system to handle different types of events.
 RF Receiver and Processing Unit: We set up an RF receiver to capture
the signals from the safety devices. This receiver was connected to a
processing unit that would decode the signals and determine the
appropriate response.
 SMS Notification System: We implemented an SMS system that would
send alerts to relevant personnel when critical events were detected. This
ensured that warehouse managers, security staff, or other stakeholders
would be informed immediately.
3. Signal Transmission and Event Processing
 Signal Transmission: When a critical event occurred, the safety device
transmitted an RF signal to the central receiver. Our team ensured that
the system would work reliably over the required distances in the
warehouse.
 Event Classification: After receiving the signal, the processing unit
classified the event according to its severity. Our team developed
algorithms to differentiate between minor disturbances and more serious
emergencies, allowing for appropriate action.
 Triggering Alerts: If the event was deemed critical, the system was
designed to automatically trigger an SMS alert to notify warehouse
personnel of the event, enabling quick response.
4. SMS Alert Logic
 Alert Content: We structured the SMS alerts to be clear and informative,
including critical details such as the event type, location within the
warehouse, and timestamp. This allowed the recipients to act quickly with
all the necessary information at hand.

TNSCST-SPS 2025 Page 4

 Alert Distribution: The system was designed to route alerts to the
relevant personnel, ensuring that the right people would receive
notifications based on the nature and location of the event.
5. Testing and Calibration
 System Testing: Our team conducted thorough testing of the entire
system to ensure reliable detection of events, accurate signal
transmission, and timely SMS delivery. We tested the system across
multiple scenarios to ensure robustness.
 Calibration and Optimization: After the initial tests, we fine-tuned the
system to optimize sensor sensitivity and signal range. We ensured that all
components worked together seamlessly, and that events were detected
and acted upon without delay.
6. Deployment and Monitoring
 Deployment in the Warehouse: Once the system was fully tested, we
deployed it across the warehouse. The safety devices, RF receivers, and
SMS modules were strategically placed to cover key areas.
 Continuous Monitoring: We set up a monitoring system to track the
performance of the system in real time. This allowed us to spot any issues
early and make adjustments as needed to ensure ongoing reliability.
7. Documentation and Reporting
 Throughout the project, our team maintained detailed documentation,
tracking each step from design to testing to deployment. This ensured that
the project was well-documented for future reference, and also provided a
solid foundation for system maintenance and upgrades.
