Non-Destructive Testing
What is NDT ???
Inspect or measure
without doing harm
NDT refers to an array of inspection methods that allow inspectors to
evaluate and collect data about a material, system or component
without permanently altering it
copyright AUGMINTECH
Destructive vs Non-Destructive Testing
Destructive testing destroys or changes the part in some way such that even if it passes the
test, it is no longer fit for service
Examples –
• tensile testing
• 3-point bend test
NDT does not destroy or change the part such that it is still fit for service if it passes the test

Non-Destructive Testing
There are a variety of NDT methods that can be used to evaluate the materials,
components as well as completed welds
All NDT methods share several common elements
Energy source
Discontinuity
These elements
are:
Detection
Indication
Observation/Recording

• testing pieces are
undamaged information on equipment
01 • items are repaired than
replaced, in case any
functioning prevents future
accidents
05
damage is found
• accurate inspection method
• tests can be repeated comprehensive testing: it
02 • several tests can be
conducted together, and
does not alter substances, so
every component or product
06
results can be correlated
N D T can be tested
ADVANTAGES
• less downtime: materials can
be tested even in operation
03 • safe testing methods
• harmless to humans • This eliminates the need to shut
down operations during testing
07
• cost effective method
• it prevents the need to replace an less waste: since substances
04 item before malfunction occurs
without destroying the piece
are not altered by NDT, they
can be further used 08

Depending on the type of non-destructive testing used on a component minor
issues can crop up
These can include simple factors like:
• Sometimes there might be a lack of
depth sizing
• Some test methods require electricity
3
• Sensitivity of inspection can • Some tests are only
sometimes be affected by effective on materials that
the finish of a component. are conductive

Disadvantages
• Components
of • Some can also be
needing to be
cleaned before and
after inspection

When are NDT methods used ?
There are NDT applications at almost any stage in the production or
life cycle of a component
Product development
To screen or sorting
In Manufacturing processes
In Assembly
In-service damage
Pipelines and Nuclear reactors in particular make use of NDT because it enables service providers to determine
the strength, safety and quality of the materials used on-site, both during construction and operations.

NDT Codes and Standards
Need ?? Most countries have laws requiring companies to
adhere to specific inspection codes and standards
when conducting inspections
Proper maintenance of assets
Safety
API (American Petroleum Institute)
The most commonly followed
organizations in the world for ASME (American Society for Mechanical Engineers)
creating NDT standards and
codes are:
ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)
ASNT (American Society For Nondestructive Testing)
