TUTORIALSHEET-5
SUBJECT: Introduction to Solid Mechanics NAME OF FACULTY: Pratish Kannaujiya
SUB. CODE: BCE-402 UNIT: 3
BRANCH: Civil Engineering TOPIC: Stresses in Beams

1) Write a short notes on : Compulsory

a) What do you know about neutral axis?
b) Difference between Neutral Axis and Neutral Surface.
c) What is section modulus (Z)? What is the value of bending moment in terms of section
modulus?
d) What do you mean by Composite beams?
e) Define Pure bending.
AKTU 2018-19, 2020-21, 2022-23)
2) Derive the equation of bending moment and write down the assumptions for theory of simple bending.

(AKTU2021-22)
3) A simply supported rectangular beam with symmetrical section 200mm in depth has moment of inertia
of 2.26 x 10-5 m4 about its neutral axis. Determine the longest span over which the beam would carry
a uniformly distributed load of 4KN/m run such that the stress due to bending does not exceed 125
MN/m2 (AKTU 2021-22)
4) simply supported beam of span 3.0 m has a cross-section 120 mm × 180 mm. If the permissible stress
in the material of the beam is 10 N/mm2, determine
(i) maximum udl it can carry
(ii) maximum concentrated load at a point 1 m from support it can carry.
Neglect moment due to self weight. (AKTU 2020-21)

5) A circular steel pipe of external diameter 60 mm and thickness 8 mm is used as a simply supported
beam over an effective span of 2 m. If permissible stress in steel is 150 N/mm2, determine the
maximum concentrated load that can be carried by it at mid span. (AKTU 2022-23)
6) Figure shows the cross-section of a cantilever beam of 2.5 m span. Material used is steel for which
maximum permissible stress is 150 N/mm2. What is the maximum uniformly distributed load this
beam can carry?
7) Two Wooden Planks 150mm * 50mm each are connected to form a T-Section of a beam. If a moment
of 3.4 kN/m is applied around the horizontal neutral axis., inducing tension below the neutral axis, find
the the stresses at the extreme fibres of the cross-section. Also calculate the total tensile force on the
cross section . (AKTU 2019-20)
8) A cantilever beam of length 10 m has a cross section of 100 mm X 130 mm has a UDL of 10 KN/m
over a length of 8 m from the left support and a concentrated load of 10 KN at the right end. Find the
bending stress in the beam. (AKTU 2017-18)
