3) A Solid Steel shaft is subjected to a torque of 45 KNm. If the angle of twist is 0.5° per metre
length of the shaft and the shear stress is not to be allowed to exceed 90MN/m2. Find
a) Suitable diameter for the shaft
b) Final Maximum shear stress
c) Maximum Shear Strain in the shaft. Take G= 80 GN/m2 (AKTU2021-22)
4) Determine the dimensions of hollow shaft with a diameter ratio of 3:4, which is to transmit
60KN at 200rpm. The maximum shear stress is limited to 70 MN/m2 and angle of twist is 3.8°
in a length of 4m. G 80GPa. (AKTU2017-18)
5) Determine the Internal and external diameter of a hollow shaft whose internal
diameter is 0.6 times external diameter and transmits 120kW at 200 rpm and the
allowable stress is limited to 75 MPa. Id the bending moment of 2800N-m is
applied to the shaft find the speed at which the shaft must rotate to transmit the
same power for the value of maximum shear stress. (AKTU2021-22)
6) Explain in details of shaft is connected in Series and parallel. (AKTU 2015-16)
7) Define the Tensional resilience and write down the expression of combined
bending and torsion.
8) A hollow shaft is subjected to a torque of 40 kNm and a bending moment of 30
kNm. The internal diameter of the shaft is one-half the external diameter. If the
maximum shear stress is not to exceed 80 MN/m², find the diameter of the shaft.
(AKTU 2015-16)
9) The maximum normal stress and the maximum shear stress analysed for a shaft of
150 mm diameter under combined bending and torsion, were found to be 120
MN/m² and 80 MN/m² respectively. Find the bending moment and torque to
which the shaft is subjected. If the maximum shear stress be limited to 100 MN/m²,
find by how much the torque can be increased if the bending moment is kept
constant. (AKTU2019-20)
