Projectile Motion - Notes

Projectile motion is the motion of an object thrown or projected into the air, subject only to
acceleration due to gravity.

Key Concepts
• Projectile: An object thrown into space with only gravity acting on it (neglecting air resistance).
• Trajectory: The curved path a projectile follows.
• Horizontal and vertical motions are independent of each other.
• Gravity only affects vertical motion, causing downward acceleration.

Equations of Motion
• Horizontal displacement: x = u■ × t
• Vertical displacement: y = u■ × t - ½ g t²
• Time of flight (T): T = 2u■ / g
• Maximum height (H): H = u■² / (2g)
• Range (R): R = (u² sin(2θ)) / g

Components of Initial Velocity

• Horizontal component: u■ = u cosθ
• Vertical component: u■ = u sinθ

Assumptions in Projectile Motion

• Air resistance is negligible.
• Gravity is constant throughout motion.
• Earth is flat for small-scale motion (no curvature considered).

Applications of Projectile Motion

• Sports (e.g., basketball, football, javelin throw).
• Military (e.g., cannonballs, missiles).
• Engineering (e.g., water fountains, fireworks).
