Test and Measurement in Sports
Introduction
→ Test: An instrument or tool used to measure performance, skill, or knowledge.
→ Measurement: Process of collecting data about performance using standard tools.
→ Evaluation: Judging performance on the basis of data obtained.
Importance of Test & Measurement:
1. Helps in knowing abilities and limitations.
2. Aids in classification of players.
3. Useful in selection of players for teams.
4. Helps in motivation and goal setting.
5. Assists in making training programs scientific.
Objectives of Test and Measurement:
→ To evaluate fitness levels.
→ To provide feedback to athletes.
→ To compare results with norms.
→ To identify strengths and weaknesses.
→ To motivate and guide improvement.
Types of Tests:
1. Physical Fitness Tests.
2. Motor Fitness Tests.
3. Skill Tests.
Physical Fitness Tests:
1. Kraus-Weber Test:
- Series of six exercises.
- Measures strength of abdominal and back muscles.
- Failure indicates poor core fitness.
2. AAHPER Youth Fitness Test:
- Pull-ups (boys), Flexed arm hang (girls).
- Sit-ups (abdominal strength).
- Shuttle Run (agility).
- Standing Broad Jump (leg power).
- 50-Yard Dash (speed).
- 600-Yard Run (endurance).
Motor Fitness Tests:
→ Barrow Three Item Test:
1. Standing Broad Jump → Leg strength.
2. Zig-Zag Run → Agility.
3. Medicine Ball Put → Arm strength.
General Motor Ability Test:
- Measures overall motor qualities like speed, strength, coordination.
- Involves multiple activities combined together.
Specific Sports Skill Tests:
1. Basketball Skill Test:
- Johnson Basketball Test: Measures dribbling and shooting.
- Knox Basketball Test: Passing accuracy.
2. Volleyball Skill Test:
- Brady Volleyball Test: Serving, spiking and passing.
3. Hockey Skill Test:
- Lockhart & McPherson Test: Dribbling, passing and shooting.
Physiological Fitness Tests:
1. Harvard Step Test → Measures cardiovascular endurance.
Procedure:
- Step up and down a 20-inch bench for 5 minutes at 30 steps/min.
- Heart rate is measured after exercise.
2. Sit and Reach Test → Measures flexibility of lower back and hamstring.
3. Ruler Drop Test → Measures reaction time.
4. 12-Minute Run/Walk Test (Cooper Test) → Measures aerobic endurance.
