Bottles of sherry normally contain 1000 milliliters. Afer the introduction of a new
method of filling the bottles, there is a suspicion that the mean volume of sherry in a
botle has changed.
In order to investigate this suspicion, a random sample of 12 bottles of sherry is
taken and the volume of sherry in each bottle is measured
The volumes, in milliliters, of sherry in these bottles are found to be
996 998 1006 1010 1009 997 999 996 1007 1008 1003 1007
Assuming that the volume of sherry in a bottle is normally distrbuted, investigate, a
the 5% level of significance. whether the mean volume of sherry in a bottle differs
from 1000 milliliters.
Suppose you start up a company that has developed a drug that is supposed
to increase IQ. You know that the standard deviation of IQ in the general
population is 15. You test your drug on 36 patients and obtain a mean IQ of
97.65. Using an alpha value of 0.05, is this IQ siguilicantly different than the
population mean of 100?
A manufacturer of sprinkler systems used for fire protection in office buildings
claims that the true average system-activation temperature is 130°F. A sample of
n=9 systems, when tested, yields a sample average activation temperature of
131.08°F. If the distribution of activation temperature is normal with standard
deviation(sample) 1.5°F, you would like to know whether the test result contradict
the
manufacturer's claim at a significance level a = 0.05.
In the population, the average IQ is 100. A team of scientists wants
to test a new medication to see if it has either a positive or negatise
effect on intelligence, or no effect at all. A sample of 30 participants
sho hase taken the medication has a mean of 140
with a standard desiation of 20. Did the medication affect
intelligence? Alpha = 0.05
A random sample of 100 men is taken and their mean height is
found to be 180 cm. The population variance o* = 49 cm*.
Find the 95% confidence interval for l, the mean height of the
population.
