FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
ELA WHEEL
Using this resource: Use this ELA wheel to introduce or review types of figurative language. You can do a couple sections
a day or the entire wheel in a day, depending on your students.
• Students can keep this graphic organizer in their notebooks as a reference or study tool.

The sections of the wheel include:

1) Simile
2) Metaphor
3) Alliteration
4) Hyperbole
5) Idiom
6) Personification

This easy-prep resource includes:

1) THREE versions of the student wheel
o ‘Open’ for students to write all notes (this version is most flexible, allowing you to phrase the notes as you’d like or
add additional items)
o ‘Fill-in’ notes, to help control student use of space; there’s also some flexibility here in how you have students fill in
the blanks
o Pre-filled notes for absent students or students who need this option; answers to examples are NOT on this version
2) Teacher version of Figurative Language Wheel:
• Includes answers and suggested definitions and examples for each section
3) Sample Wheel:
• Includes the completed notes and answers
• Shows the color key
4) An editable PPT page that is a blank wheel with background, so you can add text to make your own wheels, if you’d
like (for classroom use only - not commercial use).

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
ELA WHEEL
Features of this easy-to-use resource:
• Notes sections and examples (notes are suggestions, and you can alter or add to them if you’d like)
• Guided or independent practice: 12 practice sentences in the pattern around the circle, for students to identify the types
of figurative language.
o Includes a color code for answers IF you want to use it: students identify the figurative language used in the
sentences and then color the sections according to the color code given on the wheel (there’s a color label in each
section of the wheel)
o If you prefer NOT to use the color code, students can simply write their answers next to the sentences.
• Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows,
however they like.
o Coloring the background:
• Students don’t HAVE to color at all during instructional time….coloring the background could be an ‘early
finisher’ activity, center activity, homework, etc. (Or they can quickly shade in the 12 sections if you’re using the
color code and color the rest at another time.)
• Students don’t need to color every section of the background – part of their coloring pattern could be to leave
sections white.
• Students could color sections with patterns instead of solids – maybe polka dots in one section and squiggly lines
in another.
• This coloring part is just a chance to be creative and enjoy the stress-relief coloring can provide.☺
