CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
1.1Background of the Study
In our Secondary School now days students want to be the center of attraction.
They want to be seen as stars and hero. As a result they tend to achieve this
through disobedience to their teacher, Cultism, Prostitutions, Indecent dressing,
Exam-malpractices, Fighting, Stealing, Smoking, Building , Truancy, Drug Abuse.
Etc.
The students thought that by so doing they will be feared and be respected by
their mates. There for all hand must be on desk to device a means to counsel and
correct them. the good ones among them also need to appreciate by all.
Discipline can be define as obedience to authority and self control while
indiscipline is is the opposite of it. Indiscipline is derivated of the word discipline
which according to the champers twentieth century dictionary is a mode of life
accordance with rules. Subjection to control. The oxford advance learner’s
dictionary special price edition defines indiscipline as lack of discipline while it
define discipline as training or control, often using a system of punishment, aimed
and producing onedience to rules, elf control and ordered beheviours.
Tullulu and Bello ( 1980- 1999) assert that indiscipline is the breaking of rules and
regulation of institutions.
To this end it can simply be seen as mode of life not conformity with rules and
non- subjection to control. By extension, the term indiscipline conotes the
violation of school rules and regulations capable of obstruction the smooth and
orderly function of the school system.
Acording to Tobert (1975- 32) they are those student who have undesirable
behaviours who are not acceptable by the society such as stealing, fighting,
smoking, drug abuse etc. he further to claime that student are decying and
deteriorating more and more despite that the fact they have gone through some
stages of socializations which is meant to integrate them into the society.
Ezegbe (1993-51) describes indiscipline as lack of systematic training or
regulating control or indiscipline in a social culture situation where established
rules, regulations, laid down procedures and partern of normal bevaiours are not
observe in the control of human activities. This help to donate some form of
misconduct which steam up form a notion of an instrinsic value embedded in the
approved behaviours.
Day in day out, our country Nigeria suffers increasing rate of political
disorientation, economic destabilization, social in capacitation, moral decadency
and religious backruptcy yet answering the giant of Africa. All these are as a result
of indiscipline among students which graduated to corruption. This must have an
end if the right button are systematically and calculative parried, in our secondary
school, we must set the ball rolling in our families parent should ensure moral up
bringing and having a proper youth foundation and
Ehancing good leadership qualities in their ward as well as the Government
religious bodies, Non- government organization, and education institutions
In the view of Ukaeje (1992- 19) in his study of indiscipline knowledge and source
of indiscipline among secondary school in Nigeria, Observe that the students are
varied in their character specifically with regards to what they know about
indiscipline and where they acquired it. This means that they actuallt have need for
planned indiscipline counseling programme not opnly in school but also at homes,
Church and through media. There fore teacher, parents, pastors,Government, Film
producers Non Government organizations, elder’s etc. should try and do some
thing positive to revive discipline in our secondary school..
1.2 Statement of the problem

Indiscipline posed many problems on secondary school Onitsha South Local


Government Area of Anambra State. A careful look into the control system in the
local government in question would reveal that they have indiscipline handicaps
which help to imitate against the success of the secondary school students in the
said local government. Indiscipline then seems to be on the wining side.
We have vision of losing to the extent that our students are at best ignored and this
makes them to engage in most undesirable ways.
The cause of indiscipline can be trace to influence of peer group, cultism,
drug addition, improper up bringing of children, environmental
Influence, ignorance lack of partriotism, wrong value system, money is hononred
so much in our society no matter how it is acquired, in addition certificate is so
much valued without considering whether the bearer knows anything or not.
Some student run out of school to join business in order to get rich overnight,
while some who decide to remain in school goes into different forms of exams-
malpractice to obtain their certificate.
Indiscipline have heap a lot of problems in Nigeria which includes armed
robbery, smuggling, murder, rape, bribery, corruption, nepotism, in efficient in
office which is a product of nepotism and laziness, social inequality, taking double
standard and other organized crimes.
This topic demands our serious consideration and resolution because of its visible
impediment to national growth and development beside it is a topic of all time that
is its currency is without doubt apparent.
1.2Purpose of the study
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the cause of indiscipline
among the secondary school student in Onitsha south local Government of
Anambra State.
Investigation would be made to see the types of attitudes among students which
bring about indiscipline.
This Study Intends
(1) To find out constrain to effective discipline in secondary schools.
