Light &Value by Shading Objects

Shading Unit
OBJECTIVES: Students will learn.

How to shade an object and make it look three-dimensional.

How to use the different shading techniques.

How to create strong contrast between light and dark values


chiaroscuro.
LEARNING TARGETS: I can use at least 4 different shading
techniques in a drawing and with each technique I can show a
variety of different ranges of values from very light to very dark.

Vocabulary

1. Contrast: The difference between light


and dark areas in a drawing.
2. Implied Texture: The surface quality of
an object simulated by the artist.
3. Value Scale: A value scale shows the
range of values from black t white and
light to dark.
4. Chiaroscuro: The Italian word meaning
light to dark- in a drawing its the area of
the most contrast.
5. Occlusion Shadow: the point in which an
object blocks light.

Tonal is a shading
technique that produces a
smooth line free range of
values. This is done by
using the side of the
pencil and layers of
graphite.

technique that uses thin
parallel lines that go in
the same direction of
flow around the shape.

When hatched lines are placed at an angle
to one another, it is called crosshatching.

Scumble is a shading technique where the artist
scribbles lines and layers them to create different
values.

Smudge can be done to any
shading technique. You can use
a paper stump or your finger to
rub/smudge the graphite.
Smudge is great for skin
texture, glass bottles and metal.
