CHARACTER DESIGN IN
RELATION TO OBJECT
INTERACTION

What is Character design?
Character design, is an artistic
process executed by a character
designer. The designer draws and
designers to fit a story, script or
design brief, Character designers
and character design are featured
heavily in movies, TV shows, video
games, Children’s books and
illustration, animation, comic
books and comic strips, or even
licensing and toy design.
Purpose and Style of Character Design
A character designers job is to have a
strong knowledge drawing and design
principles to create an appealing
character that best fits the needs of
the story at hand. Fitting a character
into the story depends on the format
the character is needed for, and this
can effect how the style of the
character is created in. for example
characters like ‘Hello Kitty’ are very
graphic and stylised, as opposed to
photorealistic CGI characters like ‘The
Hulk’ in the Marvell movies.
Why is Character important?
Character design requires thorough
research into anatomy, costuming,
history, style, or theatrical references
needed to create the character
needed for the project, as well as this
designers will look into the world they
exist in, is it based in reality, In the
past, dystopian future etc. designers
do this to create the best character
design/ attributes needed for that
specific character for the story at
hand.
Character interaction
As well as looking into the construction of a character, a
designer must look into how those character will interact
with objects and each other. These interactions change
based on a multitude of factors both physical and mental.
For example: a fat character will generally have slower,
clunky and heavier walks, as well as having weightier
more solid interactions with objects, as opposed to a thin
character that will generally have fast, graceful and lighter
walks, as well as this thinner characters will have lighter
and more free flowing interactions.
The T.V show ‘Steven Universe’ highlights character
design and interaction very well, the main protagonists
are all designed differently and it affects their whole
composition of characters. Pearl is designed to be very
thin and graceful (based off of a ballerina) , her weapon
(spear) reflects her fighting style that is poised and has
self restraint, and her theme music uses classical string
instruments like violins and Chellos to highlight how her
character is calm and in control. The level of thought in

design is to animation, and the creative industry as a
