Inquiry Powerpoint

Humans are impacting the water cycle in several ways: 1) Withdrawals of water for irrigation and drinking water remove water from its natural cycle. 2) Discharges of pollutants like oil, gas, sewage, fertilizers and pesticides are added to water sources as it flows back into bodies of water. 3) Deforestation reduces evaporation and rainfall by cutting down trees, affecting local and global climates. 4) Irrigation also removes nutrients from soil and increases use of fertilizers by farmers. Conservation efforts like reducing water and chemical use can help improve the water cycle.

The water
cycle and
how humans
impact this.

Learning Progressions

 I can identify things that are problems in our environment and

help out by thinking about and taking action.

 I can solve environmental challenges by using new ideas.

 I will leave Merrin School and the world in a better way than I
found it.

 I investigate the water cycle and its effect on climate, landforms

and life.

Video of the water cycle

 Withdrawals- We take the water out of our system and use it
to irrigate crops and have it for drinking water.
z
 Discharges- We add a variety of different substances to the
How are water. When water falls and runs towards a bigger body of
humans water it collects many pollutants. In urban area pollutants
could be oil, gas, pet waste and untreated human waste from
impacting sewage plants. In rural areas it could be farm fertilizers and
and affecting pesticides.
the water  Deforestation- We are cutting down trees and because of this
cycle? local and global climates are changing. By cutting down trees
there is less water to be evaporated into the atmosphere
therefore this will result in less rain.

 Irrigation- removes water from its natural source which

removes nutrients and involves farmers using more fertilizers
on their soil.

The water cycle and human activity
facts
 Fresh water is limited- Even though the earth is covered by 75%
water only 3% of this water is fresh water

 Global warming affects the water cycle- warmer air causes more
evaporation and warm air holds more water

 The majority of fresh water is frozen in glaciers and polar caps.

z
What can we do to improve the water
cycle
 Recycle and properly dispose household materials and waste,
don’t just put them down the sink.

 Don’t over water your lawn or use a lot of fertilizers on your

garden.

 Don’t wash your car at home

 Pick up pet waste and dispose of it properly.

z
Stages of the water cycle

 Evaporation- When the water evaporates from the sea into the
sky

 Condensation- Water vapors in the air is changed to liquid water

and the cloud become heavy

 Precipitation- The clouds drop water from the sky (rain)

 Collection- The water is collected after falling from the sky and
the process begins again.
z
Follow up activity

 Write and draw the water cycle into your books

 Work collaboratively in groups of three and use VoiceThread to

record on each image the process of the water cycle. Ensure
that you do your research on each part of the water cycle and
explain its purpose and what is happening at each stage.

 Use the class website to access the link.
