LEVEL TRANSMITTERS
LIQUID HEAD MEASUREMENT Principle

• The hydrostatic pressure at the base of the vessel containing

liquid is directly proportional to the height of the liquid

• A differential pressure transmitter measures pressure

difference between tapping points and is calibrated to read the
level in terms of water column or any other unit.

• Mathematical relation
Hydrostatic Pressure p=ρgh

p-Pressure
ρ-Density
g-acc. due to gravity
h-Height
OPEN TANK MEASUREMENT

 Pressure at HP side = Patm + ρgH

 Pressure at LP side = Patm
 Differential pressure ΔP = P(HP) – P(LP) = ρgH

4-20 mA
CLOSED TANK MEASUREMENT

 Pressure at HP side = Pgas + ρgH

 Pressure at LP side = Pgas
 Differential pressure ΔP = P(HP) – P(LP) = ρgH
