THE NATURE OF STUDYING

the Latin word humanus, which
means man, cultured, and
refined.
>Scholars categorized it as a
branch of learning of social
sciences that covers human
constructs and concerns.
THE NATURE OF
ART STUDIES

ART, as a branch or field of


learning and of human
affairs, was derived from the
Latin term “ars” which
pertains to skill or ability.
Definition of ARTS given by various authors.

J.V ESTOLAS – “Art is derived from the Latin


word “ars” meaning ability or skill.

A. TAN – “Art is taken from the Italian word


“artis” which means craftmanship, skill,
mastery of form, inventiveness and the
associations that exists between materials
and techniques.
F. ZULUETA – “Art is a product of
man’s need to express himself.

C. SANCHEZ – Art is concerned itself


with the communication of certain
ideas and feelings by means of sensous
medium, color, sound, bronze,
marble, words and films.

PLATO – Art is that which brings life in


harmony with the world.
GEORGIA O’KEEFFE – Art is no what
you see but what you make others
see.

LEONARDO da VINCI – Art is never


finished only abandoned.

PABLO PICASSO – At is a life that


helps us to realize the truth.
QUALITIES OF ART
 The arts must basically exhibit aesthetic
sense and value.
 The universe of thought is another aspect
which pertains to the scope and coverage
of the idea that any work of art intends to
convey.
 Art must exhibit unique or peculiar
quality that makes the work remarkable,
appealing, and interesting to the human
eye and mind.
QUALITIES OF ARTS
 The arts in effect, must have
significant functions and impacts
to the human mind and soul.
 Art must have human
intervention.
 Creative intention is present.
FUNCTIONS OF ARTS
 Appreciative Function- it is no doubt
that the arts give amusement and joy to
most people.
 Imaginative Function- the arts
challenges the creative mind and spirit of
mind.
 Communicative and Expressive
Function- the artists express his inner
thoughts and feelings as a reflected in the
masterpiece.
 Therapeutic Function- the arts can
truly relieve and release tensions
and stress.

 Personal and Social Function-


Personal Function refers to the
utilization of arts by individuals.
Social Function is more general as
see in various structures.
SUBJECT OF ARTS
o Representational or Objective Art – the
attempt of depiction is to copy something
is real in a subjective manner.

o Non- Representational or non Objective


Art- it involves those arts without any
reference to anything outside itself. It is
also attributed to artworks that cannot be
easily recognized.
METHODS OF PRESENTING ART
SUBJECTS:
 Realism- refers to an
artistic movement which
originated in France. It
underscores objectivity
and highlights what an
object really looks like.

SUBJECTS:
 Abstraction- a way of presenting a
subject that is entirely the opposite
of realism.
FORMS OF ABSTRACTION:
 Distortion images having irregular
forms and which are twisted and
subjects has unnatural forms.
 Elongation- pertains to the objects
which are lengthened or extended.
 Mangling- commonly used form of
abstraction which objects are cut, torn
or disfigured.
 Cubism- originated from1900’s
wherein the use of basic geometric
figures is evident.
 Abstract Expressionism- focuses on
presenting subjects when emphasized
the act of creating and not of the
finished object.
METHODS OF PRESENTING ART
SUBJECTS:
 Symbolism- primarily utilizes objects
which may be representatives of
intellectual and emotional constructs.
 Fauvism- an artistic movement which
flowered during the 19th century that
focused on the use of extreme bright
colors.
 Dadaism- this movement started during
the post war period which attempted to
alter classical art practices and traditions.
METHODS OF PRESENTING ART
SUBJECTS:
 Futurism- mainly considered as a
modernist movement which exudes
speed, technology, and violence.

 Surrealism- this method is known


for “super realism” which highlights
mystical and metaphysical
constructs in which ordinary things
are presented extra ordinarily.
