Decimals and Its Operations

Decimal numbers represent quantities in the base-10 number system and are commonly used to represent monetary amounts. A decimal number has a whole number portion and a decimal portion separated by a decimal point. Decimals can be terminating, with a finite number of decimal places, or non-terminating repeating decimals where digits repeat indefinitely. Fractions can be converted to decimals by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Decimals are converted to fractions by writing the decimal as a decimal fraction and reducing it to lowest terms. Addition and subtraction of decimals involves aligning the decimal points and adding or subtracting the values in the same place. Multiplication and division of decimals involves determining the total number of decimal places in the product or quotient.

Decimals

What is a DECIMAL?
•A decimal is any number in our
base- ten number system.
•In business this is how we usually
express amount of money.
What is the base-ten number system?
•Observe the following fractions:
𝟕 𝟑𝟏 𝟏𝟐𝟑
• , ,
𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎
base-ten
We may write them in exponential
form using negative exponents.

𝟕 −1
• = 7 𝑥 10
𝟏𝟎
negative exponent
𝟑𝟏 −2
• = 31 𝑥 10
𝟏𝟎𝟎

𝟏𝟐𝟑 −3
• = 123 𝑥 10
𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎
𝟕 𝟑𝟏 𝟏𝟐𝟑
, ,

𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎
We can also call this
decimal fraction.
As you have observed our numbers
uses base 10.
•We can extend the number system to
include digits with place values that are
negative powers of ten.

Two Types of Decimals
•Terminating decimals this are
decimals with a finite number of
decimal places.

0.625
•Nonterminating repeating decimals
this are sequence of digits in the
quotient which repeat over and
over again.

How do we convert Fractions
to Decimals?
•To convert a fraction to
decimal, divide the
numerator by the
denominator.
Example: Write the following fraction to
decimal. 𝟓 𝟕
a. b.
𝟖 𝟏𝟐

𝟐𝟓 𝟑
c. d. 𝟓
𝟒 𝟖

𝟏𝟓 𝟓𝟒
e. 𝟔 f.
𝟒𝟖 𝟏𝟓
How do we convert Decimals
to Fractions?
•To convert a decimal to
fraction, write the decimal
as a decimal fraction, and
reduce this fraction to
lowest terms.
How do we write decimals to
decimal fractions?
𝟖𝟕𝟓
•12.875= 12 +
𝟏,𝟎𝟎𝟎

decimal fraction
Then reduce the fraction to its
lowest terms by finding there
factors.
𝟖𝟕𝟓 𝟓𝒙𝟓𝒙𝟓𝒙𝟕
• =

Therefore:

12.875= 12

Decimals to Fractions.

Example: Write the following decimals to
fractions.

1. 0.94

Each student will represent a number to form a decimal
number
𝒘. 𝒅 Decimal
In the w.d , W is a whole number, d is the
decimal number.
Decimal
𝒘. 𝒅
Option 1. In a terminating decimal number, the whole
number will stand and face at the right side and the
decimal number will face at the left side.
Decimal
𝒘. 𝒅
Option 2. In a non-terminating decimal number, put your
hands at the top of your head.

Option 1. In 𝐴 , the numerator (p) will stand and the denominator (q)
𝑞
will sit in front of numerator (p), and the whole number (a) will stand
besides the numerator and the denominator.

Addition and Subtraction
of Decimals
We add or subtract
decimals by adding or
subtracting with the
same place value.
We need to align the decimal point, so
that digits with the same place values lie
on the same column
•123.456 − 126.812
126.812
123.456
3.856
Note:
•If there are not enough decimal
digits in some of the numbers,
add zeros after the last nonzero
decimal digit so that all the
numbers well have the same
number of decimal places.
Try this!!!
a. 2.67 − 5.8825 + 5.006
b.12.987 − 3.0125 − 8.42 + 6.75
c. 3.25 + 15.8 − 6.218 + 9.08 −
12.97
Multiplication of Decimals
•To find the product of the given
decimals, we multiply the digits like
they are whole numbers. Count the
total number of decimal places in the
factors. The product will have the total
number of places.
Lets try this!!!
•𝟏. 𝟐𝟓 𝒙 𝟖. 𝟏 = 𝟏𝟎. 𝟏𝟐𝟓
•𝟎. 𝟔𝟐𝟓𝟗 𝒙 𝟎. 𝟐𝟓
= 𝟎. 𝟏𝟓𝟔𝟒𝟕𝟓
Note:
•If there are not enough decimal
digits in the product, you may add
zeros before the leftmost nonzero
decimal digits to fix the position of
the decimal point.
Example
•0.2625 𝑥 0.357
= 0.0937125
Lets try this!!!
a. 𝟏𝟐. 𝟖 + 𝟔. 𝟑𝟐 𝒙 ሺ𝟕 −
Division of Decimals
•To divide a decimal by another,
first move the decimal point in
both the divisor and the dividend
the same number of places to the
right to convert the divisor to a
whole number.
Example: Lets try solving this on
the board.
a. 3.52 ÷ 1.4

b. 0.5 ÷ 1.6
Lets try this!!!
a. 𝟖. 𝟗 ÷ ሺ𝟐. 𝟔 + 𝟒. 𝟓𝟔)
b. 𝟏𝟐. 𝟒 + 𝟗. 𝟖𝟔 + 𝟒. 𝟏𝟐 ÷
ሺ𝟐. 𝟏 𝒙 𝟑. 𝟒)
