Printed Circuit Boards
Definition
Printed Circuit Boards are primarily
insulating material sheet base, acting as
mechanical support, onto which conductive
strips are printed serving as electrical
connections.
PCB Design
o PCB board design defines the routing of
electrical pathways between components.
o It is derived from a schematic representation
of a circuit with the help of a software.
o It translates the schematic symbols and
libraries into physical components and
connections
Fabrication Process
o First of All we make a circuit design using PCB
software such as PCB Wizard and Easy-PC.
The PCB wizard is more user friendly and thus
mostly used at student level.
The Easy-PC is usually used at commercial and
professional level manufacturing .
Manufacturing Process
Basic requirement
o Insulated fiber-based copper-coated sheets
are commonly used for the making PCBs…
o These sheets have thickness of about 0.0007
to 0.00134”.
Steps of PCB
Fabrication Process
a. Sheet Preparation
o Cut a piece of the copper-coated fiber sheet
according to the required circuit size made using
‘PCB- wizard’.
o Clean the sheet piece carefully to remove all the
grease & dust by using a scotch pad and soft
detergent.
o Rinse it with water and
let it dry naturally or by
hot air blow.
b. Image Transferring
o Obtain a print of the designed circuit, using PCB
wizard, on a glazed paper using a laser printer.
Place the glazed paper print with its face down
onto the cleaned sheet piece and secure it in
place using scotch tape.
o Apply heat to the glazed paper back using a hot
electric iron. The printed circuit design will be
transferred onto the copper-coated sheet.
C. Repair of Printed circuit
o If the circuit print transferred on the sheet
has some missing lines or points, repair or fill
in the lines using a medium-tip permanent
marker.
d. Etching Process
o The etching is done by using Ferric Chloride
solution.
o The permanent ink of the transferred image
protects the copper circuitry drawing from
being etched away.
Steps after Etching
o Drilling Holes at Pads
o Testing of Components
o Placement of Components
o Soldering the Components
o Trimming of the components Legs
o Testing of the Circuit
Theoretical Assignment
Find Answers for the following Questions
o What are the types of Circuit Connecting boards?, List the
Applications, Merits & demerits of each type of the boards?
