SEARCH
ENGINES
Prepared by: Hannah Wynzelle T. Aban
What is a Search Engine?
-it is a software system that is designed to search for
information on the world wide web. The results are
generally presented in a line of results often referred to as
search engine result pages. (wikipedia)
FACTS
• The first search engine is the W3Catalog.
• There are 68 search engines that has been
made since 1993 up to 2013.
• Out of 68 search engines there are only 38 of
it that are active and the rest has been
inactive.
There a lot of kinds of search engines,
but this powerpoint presentation will be
discussing only two different search
engines. These search engines are one
of the most popular search engines
aside from Google, Bing and Yahoo.
These search engines are the
“Ask.com”
and the “WOW.com”
The next slide will present to
you the home page of the
Ask.com
Ask.com
-a question answering-focused e-business
and web search engine founded on June
1996 by Garrett Gruener and David
Warthen in Berkeley, California.
Ask.com
-it is originally known as Ask Jeeves,
“Jeeves” being the name of a “gentleman's
gentleman”, or valet (a mans personal
male servant), fetching answers to any
question asked.
Ask.com
ADVANTAGES
*Identifying metasites
*Redefine feature to focus on web
communities
*Ranks the result with the most trusted page
reference and not with the most visited
pages
Ask.com
DISADVANTAGES
*Smaller database
*No free URL submission
*No ability to uncluster results to easily
see more than two hits per sites
*No cached copies of pages
Ask.com
- it has different categories for different questions, these
categories are the art and literature; beauty and fashion;
business and finance; education; family; food; geography;
government and politics; health; history; hobbies and
games; holidays and celebration; home and garden; math;
pets and animals; science; sports and active lifestyle;
technology; vehicle; and world view. You can find it at the
bottom part of their home page.

Ask.com
Ask has a limited boolean searching. Ask defaults to an
AND between search terms and supports the use of - for
NOT. Either OR or ORR can be used for an OR operation,
but the operator must be in all upper case. Unfortunately,
no nesting is available, so term1 term2 OR term3 is processed as
(term1 AND term2) OR term3. Try the advanced search, but it is still
difficult to do a term1 AND (term2 OR term3) search.
Ask.com
Phrase searching is available on Ask by using
“double quotes” around a phrase or by checking the
“Phrase Match” box. Ask also supports phrase
searching when a dash is used between words
with no spaces as in cd-rom-drivers.
Ask.com
Ask display the title (roughly first 60 characters), a two line
keyword-in-context extract from the page, and the URL for
each hit. Some will also have a binoculars preview icon
before the URL and a cache copy link after the URL. Other
sections on the right margin may display for larger searches
include “Narrow your search,” “Expand your search,” and
“Realated names.” Some “sponsord links” may show up at
the bottom of the results from the google AdWords program.
Ask.com
Ask.com put its advertisement within the main
content pane, instead of in a separate right-hand
pane like google does. So when you do a
general search in Ask, the right-hand pane is
sometimes occupied by advance search options.
Ask.com
Ask will only display 10 web page records at a
time; however, up to a 100 at a time can be
displayed through a change in the preferences.
