Research Methodology for Students

This document outlines the key aspects of research methodology, including defining research as the systematic process of collecting and analyzing data to increase understanding, noting the characteristics of research such as originating with a question and following a specific plan. It also describes the scientific method of problem solving through formulating hypotheses, gathering data, analyzing results, and the research model of connecting theory, experiments, and knowledge. Finally, it provides the structure for a student research project.

Research Methodology

Introduction
Instructor: Mr. Abdul Basit
Outline
 Introduction
 Significance of research
 Motivations of studying Research
Methodology
 Scientific Method of Problem Solving
 Research Model
 Student Project Work Structure
What Research Is
 The systematic process of collecting and
analyzing information (data) in order to
increase our understanding of the
phenomenon about which we are concerned
or interested.
 Research is an organized and systematic way
to find answers to questions
What Research is not
 Research isn’t information gathering:
 Gathering information from resources such as
books or magazines isn’t research.
 No contribution to new knowledge.
 Research isn’t the transportation of facts:
 Merely transporting facts from one resource to
another doesn’t constitute research.
 No contribution to new knowledge although this
might make existing knowledge more accessible.
Research Characteristics
1. Originates with a question or problem.
2. Requires clear articulation of a goal.
3. Follows a specific plan or procedure.
4. Often divides main problem into subproblems.
5. Guided by specific problem, question, or
hypothesis.
6. Accepts certain critical assumptions.
7. Requires collection and interpretation of data.
Scientific Method
 Hypothesis
 Sequence of experiments
 Randomization
 Repetition
 Change one parameter/experiment
 Prove/Disprove Hypothesis
 Document for others to reproduce results
Scientific Method
Motivation
 Desire to get a research degree along with its
consequential benefits
 Desire to face the challenge in solving the unsolved
problems, i.e., concern over practical problems
initiates research
 Desire to get intellectual joy of doing some creative
work
 Desire to be of service to society
 Desire to get respectability
Scientific Method of Problem
Solving
 Step 1: develop the problem (define and
delimit it)
 identify independent and dependent variables
 Step 2: formulate the hypotheses
 the anticipated outcome
 Step 3: gather data
 maximize internal and external validity
 Step 4(5): analyze and interpret results
