Output Devices

Output devices communicate results from computer processing and include monitors, printers, plotters, and speakers. There are two types: soft-copy devices like monitors provide temporary digital output while hard-copy devices like printers provide permanent printed output. Common printer types are dot matrix, inkjet, and laser printers which use different technologies to produce characters on paper.

OUTPUT DEVICES

UNIT-2
OUTPUT DEVICE
• Any device that outputs information from a computer is called,
an output device.
• An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment
used to communicate the results of data processing carried out
by an information processing system (such as a computer)
which converts the electronically generated information into
human-readable form.
• Example: Monitor, Printer, Plotter, Speakers.

Output devices are of two types:
1. Soft-Copy Output- Soft copy refers to the digital document file
or electronic version of a document which is not printed on
paper. In soft copy the output is present in the USB drives and
computers etc and sometimes it is referred as temporary copy.
For example- ENews paper, Ebook, pdf notes, scanned notes etc.
2. Hard-Copy Output- Hard copy output devices are devices
that provide output on printed paper or other permanent
media that is human readable (tangible). Examples of hard
copy output would include a flyer, a letter, a book, a card,
and so on.
PRINTERS
• A printer is a device that prints output to a page.
• Printers are commonly categorized by the way they create print
characters.
• Printers come in color or simply black and white.
• Printers can be connected to the computer or networked using
print servers. Two basic print technologies are:-
1. Impact printers
2. Non-impact printers
CONTINUED…
• Impact Printers- An impact printer forms characters and
graphics on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism contacts
the paper. Example, Dot-matrix printers and Daisy-
wheel printers.
• Non-Impact Printers- A non-impact printer forms character and
graphics on a piece of paper without actually striking the paper.
Example, inkjet printers spray tiny drops of ink onto the page,
while laser printers have a cylindrical drum that rolls
electrically charged ink onto the paper.
DAISY WHEEL PRINTER
• Invented in 1970 by Dr Andrew Gabor.
• The printer uses a metal or plastic disk containing each of the letters,
numbers, and other characters it supports. When printing, the printer
rotates the disk to each character and, using a hammer, strikes each
character into an ink ribbon to create characters on paper.
DOT MATRIX PRINTERS
• A dot matrix printer forms characters and graphics on the paper by
producing pattern of dots.
• Dot matrix printers are generally noisy. It has a print head that moves
horizontally across the paper. The print head contains an array of
pins. The printer can activate each pin independent of others to
extend and strike against an inked ribbon to form a dot on the paper.
INKJET PRINTERS
• This is a non-impact printer that forms characters and graphics
by spraying tiny drops of liquid ink onto a piece of paper.
• Inkjet Printers are very quite to operate and can produce good
quality printouts of both graphics and text.
LASER PRINTER
• Laser printers are called page printers because they print a
whole page at a time.
• A laser beam is used to draw the image to be printed onto a
light sensitive drum. After the image has been drawn on the
drum a fine powder ink called toner is put onto it. The toner
only sticks where the laser has drawn the image. The paper then
passes over the drum and the toner is transferred onto the paper.
• Laser printers produce very high quality output, are very quiet
and very fast. Typical home laser printers can print 16 pages
per minute (ppm).
THANK YOU
MONITORS
• Most popular soft copy output device used.
• A monitor is associated usually with a keyboard and together
they form a video display terminal(VDT).
• A VDT is both an input and output device.
CONTINUED…
Two basic types of monitors are:
• CRT Monitor- Cathode ray tube or CRT monitors are much like
television screen and non-portable. They occupy more space
and more power.
• LCD Monitor- Liquid Crystal Display or LCD monitors are flat
panel monitors which are thinner, lighter and suitable for use
with both portable and non portable computer systems. They
occupy less space and power.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LCD AND LED
LCD LED

LCD stands for liquid crystal display. LED stands for light-emitting diodes.

All LCDs are not a subset of LED TV. All LEDs are a subset of LCD TV.

LCDs primarily use fluorescent lights. LEDs use light-emitting diodes.

Fluorescent lights used are usually placed Light-emitting diodes are usually placed
behind the screen. behind the screen or around the edges.
LCDs are usually thicker and lack energy LEDs are much thinner and are much more
efficiency compared to LEDs. energy-efficient.
PROJECTORS
• It is an output device, which is used to project information from a
computer on a large screen.
• Replaces the use of overhead projectors.
• Like monitors, screen image projectors provide a temporary, soft-
copy output.
MICROFILM
• Microfilm or computer output microfilm is the process for transferring data
from electronic media stored on computers to 16mm microfilm or microfiche.
• Computer Output Microfilm is used a solution for large organizations that
want to see a reduction of paper.
• It also provides away to preserve records for archival purposes.
• useful for organizations who need reports, such as tax
assessment documents, which have many pages.
Microfilm
PLOTTER
• A plotter is a printer that interprets commands from a
computer to make line drawings on paper with one or
more automated pens.
• It is an output device used for generating high precision,
hard copy, graphic output of varying sizes.
• It is ideal for architects, engineers, city planners, and
others who need to generate high precision.
PLOTTER
TYPES OF PLOTTER
Drum Plotter
• In drum plotter, paper on which design has to be made is
place over a drum that can rotate in both clockwise and
anti-clockwise direction.
• The drum consists of one or more pen holders mounted
perpendicular to the drum surface, and a graph plotting
software. Under software control, the drum and pens
move simultaneously to draw designs and graphs on a
sheet placed over the drum.
DRUM PLOTTER
TYPES OF PLOTTER
Flatbed Plotter
• It consist of a rectangular flatbed table, one or more
penholders mounted perpendicular to the table’s surface
and a graph plotting software.
• Under software control, the pens move in a required
manner to draw designs and graphs on the sheet placed on
the flatbed table.
• The plot size is restricted by the area of the bed. Some are
as small as A4 size, while some are very large (20 ft.*50 ft.)

VOICE RESPONSE SYSTEM
• A voice response system enables a computer to talk to a
user.
• It has an audio response device that produces temporary,
soft-copy audio output.
• Voice response system are of two types- Voice
reproduction system and speech synthesizer.
CONTINUED…
Voice reproduction system
• It produces audio output by selecting an audio output from a set of
pre-recorded audio responses.
• The system first converts the analog recording of the pre recorded
sounds into digital data and stores them on a disk or in its memory
chip permanently. To produce audio output, the system selects the
corresponding sound and converts it back into analog form and
routes it to a speaker.
• Example- Banking industry uses voice reproduction system in ATMs,
Talking alarm clocks, talking toys, etc.
CONTINUED…
Speech synthesizer
• A speech synthesizer converts text information into spoken
sentences.
• Speech synthesizers are still in their infancy because currently they
can produce only limited unique sounds.
• For reading out text information to blind persons. For example, we
can scan a recently published book using a scanner, convert it into
text using OCR software, and then the speech synthesizer can read it
out to blind persons.
