DENSITY
Q) Which is heavier more:-
1 kilogram of feathers or 1 kilogram of iron?
What is Density?
If you take the same volume of different substances,
then they will weigh different amounts.
Wood Water Iron

Q) Which has the greatest mass and therefore the most dense?
What is Density?
Density is defined as the Mass per
unit Volume of a substance

Note: The Greek letter ρ is used to mean density

Density Equation:
g or kg

Density = Mass
Volume
gcm-3 or kgm-3
cm3 or kg3

m
= m
V

What is Density?

Use the formula triangle to help you rearrange the

equation
Example
Liquid water has a density of 1000kgm-3, while ice
has density of 920kgm-3.
Calculate the volume occupied by 0.25kg of each.

Ice
V = m = 0.25 = 0.000250m3
 1000

Liquid
V = m = 0.25 = 0.000272m3
 920
Example:
What is the volume of 150 grams of lead if it has a density
of 11.3 g/cm3?
Example:
A student has a rectangular block. It is 2.13 cm wide, 3.05
cm tall, and 25.00 cm long. It has a mass of 600.95 g.
a)What is the volume of the block?

b) Determine the density of the block.
