Functions
Functions
- Is a set of ordered pairs such that no two distinct ordered pairs
have the same first elements
- All functions are considered relations but not all relations are
functions
- a function (f) from set A to set B is a rule of correspondence
that assigns to each element x in the set A exactly one element
y in set B.
- The set A is the DOMAIN of the function
- The set B is the RANGE of the function
Functions
Example: Determine whether the following ordered pairs is a function or not. If it is a
function identify its domain and range
1. (1,5)(2,6)(3,7)
2. (a,2)(b,3)(c,4)
3. (a,1)(b,1)(c,1)
4. (a,1)(a,2)(b,3)(c,4)
5. (1,1)(2,2)(3,3)(4,5)
6. (0,3)(1,5)(3,9)(6,15)
7. (0,-1)(1,0)(0,-2)(1,4)
8. (6,4)(8,5)(8,12)(2,-3)
9. (-1,1)(-1,2)(-1,3)(-1,4)
10.(4,0)(-5,-6)(2,4)(3,4)

Evaluating Functions
- Functions commonly use the symbol f(x).
-f(x) is read as “f of x”
- The symbol does not represent the function itself but it only
denotes the value of the second element given the first element x.
Example1: given f(x) = x + 2 and we wish to find to find the value of
f(3) then
f(3) = x + 2
f(3) = 3 + 2
f(3) = 5
Evaluating Functions
example 2. Given a function f(x) = 2x3 + 5x -1 where x is any real
number, find the value of function;
a. f(2)
b. f(-4)
c. f(5)
d. f(-3)
Evaluating Functions

number, find the value of function;
a. f(2)
b. f(-4)
c. f(5)
d. f(-3)
Evaluating Functions
example 3. Given a function g(x) = (x+2)3 - 7 where x is any real
number, find the value of function;
a. f(0)
b. f(-1)
c. f(3)

Operations of Functions
1. Sum of functions
-the sum of two functions is define by f and g, as the function

2. Difference of two functions
-the difference of two functions is define by f and g, as the
function (f-g) x = f(x) - g(x)
3. Product of two functions
-the product of two functions is define by f and g, as the
function (f)(g) x =
