Computer Network
Lesson 2. Configure Computer Systems and Networks
Major Types of Computer Networks
LAN- A local area network (LAN) is a collection of devices connected
together in one physical location, such as a building, office, or home.
Think wires plugging computers into each other. Usually used in schools
or offices.
Major Types of Computer Networks
WLAN- Wireless local area network
- Same as LAN but no wires.
Major Types of Computer Networks
MAN = Metropolitan-Area Network. A network that is utilized across
multiple buildings. A MAN is MUCH LARGER than the standard Local-
Area Network (LAN) but is NOT AS LARGE as a Wide Area Network
(WAN) and commonly is used in school campuses and large companies
with multiple buildings.
Major Types of Computer Networks
WAN = Wide Area Networks. A collection of computers and
network resources connected via a network over a
geographic area.
Wide-Area Networks are commonly connected either through
the Internet or special arrangements made with phone
companies or other service providers.
Major Types of Computer Networks
PAN- Personal Area Network is a computer network for interconnecting
electronic devices within an individual person's workspace.
A PAN provides data transmission among devices such as computers,
smartphones, tablets and personal digital assistants
-mostly Bluetooth stuff

In networking, Ethernet/ LAN cables are
essential components
Ethernet/ LAN cable is a cord that runs from a
router, modem, or network switch to your
computer, giving your device access to the local
area network (LAN) — in other words, giving it
internet access.
Ethernet/ LAN Patch Cables
• Straight Through Cable- a type of twisted pair cable that is used in
local area networks to connect a computer to a network hub such as a
router.
-DIFFERENT DEVICES
Example: computer- router
switch- router
computer- switch
Ethernet/ LAN Patch Cables
• Cross-over Cable- a type of Ethernet cable used to connect computing
devices together directly.
-LIKE DEVICES
Example: computer- computer
switch- switch
router-router
Ethernet/ LAN Patch Cables
Straight Through Cable
Type-568 A
Tip 1 Tip 2
For connecting unlike devices. Automatic configuration of receiving and sending data packets
Ethernet/ LAN Patch Cables
Straight Through Cable
Type-568 B
Tip 1 Tip 2
T568B is the preferred format for new networks in the United States
