Lesson 1:
Random
Variables
Welcome,
my awesome
students!
LET'S WORK TOGETHER, DO OUR BEST TO
LEARN AS MUCH AS WE CAN, AND RESPECT
AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER THROUGH ALL THE
CHALLENGES. LET'S DO THIS!
After going through this module,
students are expected to:
illustrate random variables
(discrete and continuous)
distinguishes between a discrete
and
Activity: WOULD YOU RATHER
The learners will choose between the two options by raising their index
finger for choosing option 1 and raise both the index finger and the
middle finger for choosing option 2.
Activity: WOULD YOU RATHER
1. Read a book or watch a movie?
2. Loose all your teeth or all of your hair?
Activity: WOULD YOU RATHER
3. Have your dream job or find your true love?
4. Drink coffee or milk tea?
5. Date a great dancer or a great singer?
Based from the activity,
how do you differentiate
Statistics from Probability?
TRIVIA: The word
"Filipinas" first
appeared in the first
Philippine coins, from 1861
to 1868, during the
Spanish rule. The
denominations are 1,
2, and 4 pesos. They
were gold and silver
Let's Develop:
Coin Toss
Experiment
Toss a coin three
times and observe
how many times the
tails will occur.
Record the results.
How did you obtain the
results?
In the activity, you observed
how many times the tails will
occur. The number of times the
tails occured is called the
Random Variable X.
A Random Variable is a variable
that assumes numerical values
associated with the random
outcomes of an experiment,
where one (and only one)
numerical value is assigned to each
sample point.
Two Types
of Random
Variables
Discrete Random
is aVariable
quantitative random variable that
can assume a countable number of
outcomes. Hence a random variable
is discrete if its possible values are
counting numbers.
Continuous Random
is aVariable
quantitative random variable that can
assume an uncountable number of
values.
If a random variable will take on
values with an interval or continuous
scale,
C O M P L E T E T H E TA B L E B E L OW
Activity: What I Can
Do? whether each variable as
A. Identify
discrete or continuous.
1.the no. of the telephone calls
received
2. the length of a piece of ribbon
3. speed of a train
4. number of flaws in a bolt of
fabric
5. a person's age
6. the weight of a bag of apples
7. the number of felony arrests in
a town
8. the population of the
Philippines
9. the number of goals in a soccer
How do you
How do you distinguish
illustrate discrete
random from
variables? continuous
random
variables?
Reflectio

The learnerswill write in their journal,
their learning, realization and
commitment by completing the phrases:
I learned that __________________________________________
It made me realize that __________________________________________
I therefore commit to __________________________________________
