Lab No. 03: Kirchhoff's Voltage Law

This document describes an experiment to verify Kirchhoff's voltage law (KVL) for series circuits. KVL states that the total voltage around a closed loop is equal to the sum of the voltage drops within that loop. The experiment uses a circuit with resistors in series, measures the current through and voltage across each resistor, and applies KVL to check that the total voltage sums to zero. The results are recorded in a table to verify the calculations match the measurements.

Kirchhoff's Voltage Law

Objective
 To Study and Verify Kirchhoff's Voltage Law(KVL) for
Series Circuits.

Equipment

Theory

Kirchhoff's Voltage Law or KVL,

states that “in any closed loop
network, the total voltage around the
loop is equal to the sum of all the
voltage drops within the same loop”
which is also equal to zero. In other
words the algebraic sum of all
voltages within the loop must be equal
to zero. This idea by Kirchhoff is
known as the Conservation of
Energy.
Theory
By algebraic, I mean accounting for signs (polarities) as well as magnitudes.
By loop, I mean any path traced from one point in a circuit around to other points in
that circuit, and finally back to the initial point.

Calculation
• Voltage Applied(V) = V
• Resistance(R1)= Ω, R2= Ω, R3= Ω
• Equivalent resistance(Req)=R1+R2+R3.
I=Vs/Req

• V1(Voltage across R1)= I*R1= V

• V2(Voltage across R2)= I*R2= V
• V3(Voltage across R3)= I*R3= V
Apply KVL in loop
