Sex Limited Traits

This document provides a summary of sex-limited traits. It defines sex-limited traits as generally autosomal traits that are expressed or visible in only one gender. Examples given include lactation in females and the ability to grow a beard or mustache in males. The document discusses sex-limited trait genotypes and phenotypes in males and females. It also lists some diseases that predominantly or exclusively affect one sex, such as ovarian cancer in females and prostate cancer in males. In 3 sentences or less: This document defines and provides examples of sex-limited traits, which are generally autosomal traits expressed in only one gender, and discusses related genetic concepts and sex-specific diseases.

SEX LIMITED TRAITS
• Sex Limited Traits are
generally autosomal, which
means they are not found on
the X and Y chromosomes.
• The sex limited traits are
expressed (visible) only in one
gender.

SEX LIMITED TRAITS
• These genes are present in
both sexes but….
• they are expressed in only
one sex while in the other
they remain “turned off”,
which means that the trait
has zero penetrance in the
other sex.
SEX LIMITED TRAITS
• Despite having the same
genotype, both the sexes show
different traits or phenotypes
for these genes.
• Sex hormone and other
physiological differences
between male and female affect
the expression of these genes.
SEX LIMITED TRAITS

visible only within

DISEASES
• OVARIAN CANCER
- A cancer begins in the ovaries of the women,
which is located on each side of uterus.

• Polycystic ovary syndrome

-A condition in which the ovaries produce an
abnormal amount of androgens, male sex
hormones that are usually present in women in
small amounts.
DISEASES
• Endometriosis
-A problem affecting a woman’s uterus—the place where a baby
grows when a woman is pregnant. Endometriosis is when the
kind of tissue that normally lines the uterus grows somewhere
else. It can grow on the ovaries, behind the uterus, on the bowels,
or on the bladder.
• Gynaecologic Cancer
-Any cancer that starts in a woman’s reproductive organs.
Gynaecologic cancers begin in different places within a woman’s
pelvis, which is the area below the stomach and in between the
hip bones.
DISEASES
• Prostate Cancer
- Begins when cells in the prostate gland
start to grow out of control. The prostate is
a gland found only in males. It makes some
of the fluid that is part of semen.
DISEASES

• Testicular Cancer
- A growth of cells that
starts in the testicles.
