COURSE AIMS
The course aims to provide basic knowledge about
the theory of teaching and learning
Enrich the understanding of the content of the
subject by strengthening the concepts that are
related to the way of transferring knowledge,
How children learn and cognitive theories of
learning.
Builds knowledge about the functioning of the
mind, the process of understanding and
memorizing.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
• At the end of the course students will be able to:
1. identify major theories, theorists, and details in
concepts of teaching and learning
2. to synthesize data related to the role and
responsibilities of teachers;
3. analyze practice and theory pedagogy of the
learning process;
4. organize knowledge related to learning theories.

Concept of learning
• Learning is about a change: the change brought about
by developing a new skill, understanding a scientific
law, changing an attitude.
• The change is not merely incidental or natural
• Learning is a relatively permanent change, usually
brought about intentionally.
• When we attend a course, search through a book, or
read a discussion paper, we set out to learn!
• Other learning can take place without planning, for
example by experience.

Concept of learning
• Concept of learning = much wider than just
something which takes place in a school or college,
in a classroom.
• We may think of it as a person sitting alone at night,
trying to memorize a lot of facts so that s/he can
pass an exam
• Children learn a great deal before they even get to
school - they learn to speak, to walk.
• Educational psychologists tell us that any activity
which leads to a change in our behavior is ‘learning’

Here are some ideas about learning:
• Learning can be formal or informal
• We don’t just learn knowledge and facts - we also
learn skills and attitudes
• People learn in different ways
• Learning can be superficial or deep
• Motivation is important for learning
• Learning continues throughout a person’s lifetime

Concept of teaching
• Our understanding of what ‘teaching’ is, is based on our
past experience.
• Our earliest experience was in school, where the teacher
stood in front of the class, telling us what to do and what
to learn.
• ‘Teaching is helping other people to learn’
• Teaching can be defined as engagement with learners to
enable their understanding and application of knowledge
• It includes design, content selection, delivery, assessment
and reflection.
