FIVE KEY ELEMENTS OF EI
5 KEY ELEMENTS
Psychologist and author Daniel Goleman defines the five key elements of EI as:
1. Self-awareness If you’re self-aware, you understand your emotions and their
triggers. You also know how your emotions and actions affect those around you.
2. Self-regulation is the ability to control and adjust your emotions to create a
more positive effect. Being in control of your feelings is essential in any situation
because your emotions have a strong effect on other people.
3. Motivation is the desire to do something. It relates to emotional intelligence
because your desires can promote different feelings toward something.

How I applied emotional intelligence in
my real life?
Real life scenario: while I taking with my parents regarding my future plans my
sister criticized that I don’t know anything and she said I cannot do anything.
1) Self – awareness: I recognized my emotions. I felt hurt becoz of my sister
words but I acknowledge these emotions without immediately reacting.
2) Self regulation: I take a deep breath and refrain myself from reacting
impulsively.
3) Motivation: I viewed the criticism as an opportunity for personal growth. I
motivated myself and understand my sister’s perspective and I considered the
areas of my improvement.

4) Empathy
I try to understand my sister’s intentions whether there might be underlying
reasons for criticism.
5) social skills:
I had clam and open conversations with my sister. Regarding her criticism about
me.
After learning and understanding the emotional intelligence, I able to manage my
emotions, and I able to understand others emotions deeply.
