2.1 TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY
Topographic survey was carried out in order to come up with the most
appropriate design, the designer requires an accurate Digital Terrain
Model (DTM) of the existing ground.

The scope for this survey mainly entailed:

• Establishment of control points (3 temporary bench marks were
established).
• Carrying out a detailed topographical survey of a 30m corridor of the
road for the entire approach road length (5.2km) every 20m.
• Carrying out a detailed topographical survey of the river for 500m on
upstream and downstream of proposed bridge site location.
9
2.1 Topographic Survey Cont’d
The deliverables for the topographic survey are as follows:
• A specific topographic completion report clearly presenting
the methodology, control points(see table below), field works
reporting and main outcomes.

Rainfall data
Rainfall data for Arua weather station for a period of 50 years from
Uganda Meteorological Authority was analyzed and IDF curves
generated for bridge accordingly.

Design of Drainage Structures
 Catchment Delineation
o Delineation of catchment for the bridge location was
determined using of spatial analysis tools within ArcGIS and a
DEM.
o The catchment area is 281.28 square kilometers
 5, 10, 25, and 50 year recurrence intervals were used for each
runoff method. Return periods for design floods for the bridge
structure was chosen in accordance with MoWT Volume II
Guidelines. 13
2.3. GEOTECHNICAL AND SOILS INVESTIGATION
Objectives of the study
• To determine subgrade characteristics for the approach roads
• To identify sources of materials for construction
• To determine soil characteristics at proposed bridge foundations
locations
Approach road investigations
The investigations carried out included:
• Test pit logging and soils sampling
• Dynamic Cone Penetration testing
• Soils and materials investigations
• Location of construction materials such as sand, aggregates, etc. 14
2.2 GEOTECHNICAL AND SOILS INVESTIGATION Cont’d
Bridge foundation Investigations
The field work undertaken during the geotechnical investigations
for the bridge foundation include:
• Drilling of bore holes at the abutment and pier locations up to
10m depth,
• Performing Standard Penetrometer Tests every 1.5m depth,
• Logging the bore holes,
• Collection of disturbed and undisturbed samples,
• Dynamic probe tests, and,
• Ground water investigation. 15

Geotechnical Investigations Results
• The Allowable Bearing Capacity values based on Bowles approach
generally increased with depth. The 400Kpa was got over the
weathered stratum.
• Its is recommended that the footing be placed atop the sound
rock whose depths vary from 2.0m (Kuru side) and 4.5m depth
(Kei side) with bearing capacity well over 500Kpa.
• The footing are to be anchored into the sound rock.

Recommended Bearing Capacity for the design of footings is 500Kpa.
