Welcome to the
Presentation on
IRC/IS/ASTM
CODES
• Indian Road Congress
• The Indian Roads Congress (IRC)
is the Apex Body of Highway
Engineers in the country. The IRC
was set up in December, 1934 on the
recommendations of the Indian Road
Development Committee best known
as Jayakar Committee set up by the
Govt. of India with the objective of
Road Development in India.
• What is significance of IRC in road
construction?
• The IRC was constituted to provide a
forum for regular pooling of
experience and ideas on all matters
affecting the construction and
maintenance of roads in India.
Presently IRC has become the active
body to recommend specifications
regarding design and construction of
• What are IRC standards?
• The Principal objectives of IRC are to
provide a national forum for regular
pooling of experience and ideas on all
matters concerned with the
construction and maintenance of
highways, to recommend standard
specifications and to provide a
platform for the expression of
professional opinion on matters
• FUNCTIONS OF
I.R.C.
• (1) To provide a platform for
expression of collective opinion of its
members for all the matters affecting
the construction and maintenance of
roads in India.
(2) To suggest measures for planning,
design, construction and maintenance
of roads and bridges in India.
Indian Standard Codes
• A large number of Indian Standard (IS) codes are
available that are meant for virtually every aspect
of civil engineering one can think of. During one’s
professional life one normally uses only a handful
of them depending on the nature of work they are
involved in. Civil engineers engaged in
construction activities of large projects usually
have to refer to a good number of IS codes as such
projects entail use a variety of construction
materials in many varieties of structures such as
buildings, roads, steel structures, all sorts of
foundations.
Indian standard codes are list of codes used for Civil
Engineers in India for the purpose of design and analysis of
civil engineering structures such
as Buildings, Dams, Roads, Railways, and Airports.
• IS: 456 – code of practice for plain and reinforced concrete.
• IS: 383 – specifications for fine and coarse aggregate from
natural sources for concrete.

ASTM International
• What is meant by ASTM?
• ASTM International, formerly known as American
Society for Testing and Materials, is an
international Standards Organization that
develops and publishes voluntary consensus
technical Standards for a wide range of
materials, products, systems, and services. Some
12,575 ASTM voluntary consensus standards
operate globally. It is founded in 1902 as the
American Section of the International Association
for Testing Materials.
• Inthe United States, ASTM standards have
been adopted, by incorporation or by
reference, in many federal, state, and
municipal government regulations.
The National Technology Transfer and
Advancement Act, passed in 1995, requires
the federal government to use privately
developed consensus standards whenever
possible. The Act reflects what had long
been recommended as best practice within
the federal government.
