Computer Network

The document provides an overview of computer networks, defining them as groups of computers connected for information exchange. It outlines the five basic components of a computer network: sender, receiver, transmission media, protocol, and message, and describes three types of networks: LAN, MAN, and WAN. The lesson aims to enhance students' understanding of these concepts through activities and video content.

Lesson objectives
■ General Objective: At the end of the lesson student should become
knowledgeable and shows a certain degree of understanding for the various
components of a computer network.

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

■ 1. define the term computer network with 96% accuracy after engagement
activity.
■ 2. list the five basic components of a computer network.
■ 3. Clearly identify and describe by naming features of all 3 types of computer
network.
WHAT IS A
COMPUTER
NETWORK
What is a computer network?

What is a computer network?

■ “A computer network is a group of two or more computers linked together for
exchanging information, data, or resources.”
■ A computer network is a group of computers linked to each other that enables
the computer to communicate with another computer and share their resources,
data, and applications.
Class activity

■ After successfully defining the term computer network, students will be allowed
five minutes to do a Google search on what the components of a computer
network are.

Five components of a computer network

■ Sender
■ Receiver
■ Transmission media
■ Protocol
■ Message
Five components of a computer network

■ Sender is the device that has the data and wants to send it to other devices
connected on the net work
■ The receiver is the device that is expecting data from other devices on the
network
■ In order to transfer data from one device to another device We need a
transmission media such as wires and cables etc.
■ Message is the data or information Which needs to be transferred From one
device to another device over a computer network
■ Protocols are rules that are Agreed-upon by both sender and receiver. Without a
protocol, two devices cannot communicate with each other.
TYPES OF
COMPUTER
NETWORK
LAN(Local Area Network)

■ Local Area Network is a group of computers connected to each other in a small

area such as building, office.
■ LAN is used for connecting two or more personal computers through a
communication medium such as twisted pair, coaxial cable, etc.
■ It is less costly as it is built with inexpensive hardware such as hubs, network
adapters, and ethernet cables.
■ The data is transferred at an extremely faster rate in Local Area Network.
■ Local Area Network provides higher security.
LAN (Local area network)
MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)
■ A metropolitan area network is a network that covers a larger geographic area by
interconnecting a different LAN to form a larger network.
■ In MAN, various LANs are connected to each other through a telephone
exchange line.
■ MAN is used in communication between the banks in a city.
■ It can be used in an Airline Reservation.
■ It can be used in a college within a city.
■ It can also be used for communication in the military.
■ It has a higher range than Local Area Network(LAN).
MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)
WAN(Wide Area Network)

■ A Wide Area Network is a network that extends over a large geographical area
such as states or countries.
■ A Wide Area Network is quite bigger network than the LAN.
■ A Wide Area Network is not limited to a single location, but it spans over a large
geographical area through a telephone line, fibre optic cable or satellite links.
■ The internet is one of the biggest WAN in the world.
■ A Wide Area Network is widely used in the field of Business, government, and
education.
